probably stupid question, but I keep reading references to differences in transfer cases and I'm not sure I understand.

Okay the one piece and two piece... the change was in ? 1980 and the split case is a lot stronger?

and then the 3 vs. 4 speed...

    2H, N, 4H, 4L

is this the 3 speed? what is the 4 speed?

    thanks for any info

It's the type of case that came with the 3pd or 4spd transmission. So when someone say they have a 3spd transfer case they really are meaning they have a 3spd transmission that goes with it. Gearing is almost the same. And gear selection between high and low are all the same between the t-cases.

Linked from the Tech section. Lots of good info...

    http://www.kinzers.com/don/landcruiser/tcase_tech/

Generally the "3 speed" T-case had a lower gear ratio (2.31:1) and the "4 speed" T-case had a slighter higher gear ratio (1.96:1) due to a lower 1st gear on the 4 speed tranny. If you are willing to put in some work, you can mate a "3 speed" T-case to a 4 speed tranny and get the best of both low gears!

    Hi All:

No worries! A valid question, for sure! The "slang" definitions we use here on "MUD" can be very confusing to those not so familiar with our "jargon."

    Regards,

    Alan
