Ok, this really sucks. I'm super, super-depressed.

:bang:

The doors actually came out quite well. The finish is good. Not great, but good. Definitely as good as I had hoped.

HOWEVER, I feel like a complete idiot, and am just really bummed out about the color.

I knew the color I had was not a perfect match for most of the vehicle. But I thought it was closer than it is.

When the rig was restored by CCOT in the '90s they painted everything but the dashboard. You could tell because the tint of the dash was a little lighter, and a slightly "greener" yellow.

When I bought the rig it came with a can of paint from Wesco paint supply and the PO had done some touch up. It was clear the touchup was the ORIGINAL color (matched the dashboard) but it was blended pretty well by whoever painted it. So at 10 feet the rig looked great, but if you were up close you could see the blend.

I knew I should have just had someone match the 'new' paint, but I already had that one can and I took the shortcut and just had additional cans made with that same formula.

Because of this the half-doors look like absolute :censor:.

I would have been better off painting them purple.

I know these doors will only be on during the summer, but I know it's going to just kill me everytime I see it.

I am going to cry myself to sleep now.

:crybaby::crybaby:

You can't live with that. Just take them off and sand them down. Take your gas door or vent into your local auto paint store and have them mix up a couple of cans of the right color. After all of the work you've done, putting another couple of coats on the doors isn't the end of the world.

That is a very nice rig that any of us would be glad to own. Don't beat yourself up.

Get the right yellow paint and hit them again so that they match (or, pay someone to do it). Another option would be to paint them gray like the wheels, which would make them look kinda like softdoors.

Edited to add: Get one of the trigger devices that clips onto a rattle can. Much easier to use when painting.

yep. Practice run. No big deal.

Dropped off my gas door at Wesco today. Ali promises me he can match it and will have the paint ready in a few days.

He was impressed by my rattle-can skillz. That made me smile.

Looks better in the sunlight, but only marginally so.

Live and learn.

I picked up some new paint yesterday, but it's now too dark/brown. So we're going to try another blend. I think mixing the OEM color with this new blend might just be just right. We'll see....

Momma used to say, "practice makes perfect"

Next time you spray it you'll be an expert. By the end you'll be squirting the paint with your thumb though. Rattle can jobs are hell on your fingers. :D

Use those handles that attach on the top, makes a world of difference and saves your fingers!

I don't get it :grinpimp:

With that wonderful 40, those WWII autos and most of all, that incredible garage - what are you doing with rattle cans?

Even I (with my toy compressor) am looking at a good mini gun - if I can find one that sprays EP.

Just kidding - envy is a terrible thing :crybaby: - good luck with the repaint.

I recently took a part down to my local auto paint supplier, and instead of going with a scan, I borrowed their big dupont book of paint samples, and went to sit outside in the sunlight for 5 minutes...found a perfect match! I love those sample books...the ones with the holes cut out right in the paint sample square...really easy to see which sample was a perfect match once I out the page right on the part.

Hope this helps

Dunno. Didn't really consider what it would take to get a real mini-gun setup. Educate me.

@Bull - if you are watching, maybe I can just borrow yours?

Nothing in the book matched.

Today I went down there with my OEM color (about 1/4 pint) and the ~1/2 pint of the 'new' (too dark) color. We decided to just mix them together.

IT IS A PERFECT MATCH. I have 1 rattle can of this new brew and will confirm it's perfect this weekend....
