highlandcruizer & softtopguy,

I have an older style OEM soft top that you could use. It's made of thick canvas and no zippers. All twist lock fasteners. The three window panels are removable as well as roll-up. Due to the age of this top it has shrunk quite bit, but still fits on the truck.

Not sure if this is what folks are looking for but it is oem. It flaps in the wind a lot less that the later style oem tops which were made from the thinner material.

Let me know if you want better pics.

We have been corresponding by e-mail/pm He has confirmed with softopguy.

here are pics of my "Type A" bows......

Thanks , Bigredfj40

That 40 is a thing of beauty !

Love the Q78's/stock rims that you and '82 have .

Those bows do not look like they will be that hard to reproduce, The door piece is a different story, but there are lots of rusty tops out there and the door piece would probably be useable, start hoarding those rusty tops!!

Just catching back up...been wheeling over the weekend.

The top in #142 is about exactly the look, color and type of material I'd be looking for in an OEM top. Cept I'd want the two little rear windows on each side of the rear window opening - safari style. Don't care if the side window is one - or split. Lots of options. I do want the sides, the rear sides (either side of rear window opening) and the rear window to all be removable.

Comment - I've had two of Ehsan's top and bow sets. They were very nice. I now have most of the OEM stuff thanks to Mark - and well, the OEM quality is a bit better, and also appears to be lighter. Suspect that Ehsan's workers are fabbing them from old top sides?

Comment 2 - The frames that I have had from Ehsan have had an additional frame setup for the rear opening that attaches to the rear bow and the last bolt holes in the tub next to the door opening - similar to what you would get with the amby door top setup. I think that having that with a standard non-amby top is a bonus idea.

Interesing to see what you come up with - material and pricewise. You might want to go ahead and start fabbing up an order sheet for the myriad of options one could ask for on these tops, such as 3 window, 5 window, 7 window, zip out panels, etc.

I had a question for JohnnyC, you mentioned earlier that some Military spec tops came with a thermal layer. What kind of material was that? I'm in a colder climate, and may use my top for quite a bit of the year when it gets here. But I was curious what that thermal material was, or if there is something you would recommend. Would using that spary adhesive work to attach it? Was it on the sides too, cut out around the windows, or maybe just one panel on the top surface. Just curious about this is all.

Was there any change in bow style/dementions , over the years , in 40 series production ?

I've been told/read that there might be a slight change in '74 around the door frame.

Which I guess might correspond with the hard door style change ?

I think the only difference in door frame parts would have been in the very early corrugated hardtop versions. The top weatherstrip is part of the top and not the door, which makes the doors slightly shorter. Not sure of exactly which years this effects, but probably '65 and older. I wouldn't worry about making different versions since the soft doors and hard doors 66-8* will all fit the same AFAIK.

In the winter of 1987, I was coming back from visiting my folks in Kodiak, Ak. While driving through Canada the daytime temp was -20. Had the radiator blocked off and the heater on full. Almost warm air might have kept the cab just a bit above freezing. My soft top Kayline at the time, just couldn't keep out the cold. A local in the Yukon took me over to a hardware store where we picked up some cardboard and fiberglas insolation. Put the cardboard up against the roll cage and stuffed the insolation between the softtop and cardboard. Got the cab up to atleast 50 degrees. Since then when in really cold weather I slide thermal sheets inbetween the rollbars and material. Just slide it out in the summer to take the top up or down.

Hello, I need a soft top for 1980 FJ40, do you know will you will have soft tops in stock?

:)
This thread/project started last friday..........stay tuned ! :D

Not that it's immediately important....

But.....I've been emailed some info stating that , There is approximately a one inch difference pre/post '74........That would primarily be a concern for using hard doors .

Supposedly, info attained on mud , written by Ehsan .[ I haven't been able to find it , so far]

Any other confirmation on this ? [no offense MDH33]

I'd like to be absolutely certain , so that , we don't run into any issues down the road , if this project is successful.

randy '82cruiser' has early bows...from mid 60's and mid 60's canvas on his 82 fj40...the doors seem to fit just fine..you may want to send a pm his way...

my bows are from a 64 fj40 and my rig is a 11/74...fits just fine and no door issues.

early doors with 'bug catcher' wing windows had a weather strip incorporated in the top door bow...but fitment of canvas is the same AFAIK

the military version ..."winter tops" in military slang it meen to have side curtins and doors... "Nowegian winter tops" came with a plastic coated od canvas and hard plastic/glass windows with metal edge holding strips...with weather flaps on all atachment point to lessen air infiltaration.

Some mil top guys have put thermal liners in their tops it fits under the canvas between the bows and canvas...when i say thermal liner i use that loosley...they use moving blankets...but the best part is they are mold and mildew resistant...which you need...and they are panded hence the 'thermal liner'.

they work quite well...so why not design a winter top version for us snowie area guys :) incorporating a padded liner (thermal liner) for warmth...and make the top like a "Nowegian winter top"

this is not here nor there...we need to get "normal" tops made first :D

True..True....:D

Thats a great idea though !........I really appreciate any novel ideas ...[to me]....posted.....so that we can refer back to this thread , in the future .

Well, you got my attention. Does anyone have a metaltech cage with factory bows installed? Or maybe a better question, does the factory bow work with the metaltech cage?
