This should be quick and easy. I have 1971 FJ40 and am wondering if the turn signal should self cancel when making a turn. Figured I'd ask before tearing into the steering column.

My 74 does

Yes, my 71 does. Most of the time anyway, the mechanism is pretty worn and doesn't work sometimes in one direction.

Yes it should. It is less likely to work properly if the clamp that holds the signal apparatus to the steering shaft (the lower one) is off at all. There is a pin in the clamp that goes into a hole on the shaft that aligns it. Check to see that the pin is in the hole if you are having trouble.

Otherwise, there is a pin in the steering wheel that is what actually clicks things back into place. I have found that these will loosen up or drop out as well. It is worth pulling the steering wheel and checking this pin, and epoxying it solidly into place.

I think that the turn signal lever and the canceling mechanism are still available new from Toyota for around $75. If you pull your steering wheel, you will see that two "clickers" that get knocked by a pin on the back of the steering wheel and cause the signal to cancel. I bet your clickers are caput but they might just be dirty.

To add on... There are also springs in there too if I remember correctly. Mine were worn and had to be replaced..
I think I used 2 from a old style "clicking" pens:cheers: .

Cheers

That's what I found on my truck, one of the pins is broken off, the other is present, thus, turn signal canceling works in one direction, not the other.

BTW, spelling is "kaputt" :D

Since we're correcting spelling here, it's actually "kaput". That is unless you're speaking in German. Webster's Dictionary
