Even thou friends of oceano dunes won the lawsuit against the California coastal commission, and this means the dunes are to be managed by the county. last time I checked, the fence was still up at pole 6 so you need to turn into the dunes at 4,5 or 6. But the back is totally open.

This will he my first time at the dunes. Can anyone give a little rundown of where folks are gathering/camping and activities for the event? Or point me to where I can read up? I know nothing about the poles and fences for example.

Or can I just

Heres a map and you can see some of the rules on the right side. I also pasted these rules. I can lead a trip all the way to the back bowls and out again if anyone wants to go. I play there almost every weekend and know all the routes. Most important thing is driving away from the beach or off something you can’t see past may be dangerous and when your off camber make a post on FB jerk pirates for a recovery. Hopefully you already have rated recovery points.

I'll be coming down on thursday, in my Troopy with front and rear recovery points, onboard air, tracks, and a strap. No winch. I'm joining a friend in a (gasp) Tacoma. Both of us have a fair amount of Baja beach experience but overlanders can get heavy so ya never know. We plan to rough it in open camping.

Thanks for posting those rules. It sounds like I need to get a whip and a flag. Any tips or recommendations? How tall? Can I put anything I want on the flag? Like a "Screw the CCC" banner?

There’s a convenience store off the south entrance that does air for 5$. And sometimes a trailer on the weekends till 4pm. Air down to 20ish or with 35’s I go to 15, you’re not gonna blow a bead in the sand. You can camp anywhere past marker 4 on the beach and even in the dunes for a quite night. As you know dynamic straps are best in sand and run any flag you want as long as it’s above 8’, F the CCC is encouraged lol. You can also get flags at the trailers on the beach and I’ll bring spares. I’ll have a SB 4x4 flag on, maybe be running an 80 or 77. Ya gotta buy a $10 camping spot to be legal and the boards work good just tie some leashes on em so you don’t loose $300. Like me. Lol

Even the taco your buddy is bringing should be gtg. You can even do the dunes in a RX 350 with street tires aired down to 10psi. Heres my buddy

My only “safety” recommendation is to go slow driving away from the beach and if ur sideways don’t keep driving because ur downhill tire will dig in deeper and you may roll over. Call for help and get a stabilizing winch on the high side bumper. If you can put boards under the low tires. Or go unlocked so u only spin the uphill tires.

For those who are unfamiliar with the layout of the dunes I can show you guys the back bowls and give you some helpful hints. I usually start at post 4 by the bathroom. And a radio is encouraged, it helps with recoveries and driver warnings. I can do multiple trips each day. Hows 4pm fri and 10am sat and sun sound? Thanks Pete
