i looked into this hard last year, researching reading and meeting with a
turbo guy. my desire was to get a cheap low boost turbo set up that will get the truck over the hump instead of airborne. Lacking the fab skills meant it was an expensive job and i was too dependent on others so i gave up. i still think there is a huge market for an inexpensive low boost 80 turbo kit even if it does not generate the kind of numbers the pricey kits produce.
I have been following the thread from the start. Nice job, I am impressed at your cost of about $1000 currently. The ducting looks great. Do you have a target for the final boost number??? I would love to see 10psi dynoed with the Begi FPR, wide band O2 sensor and tuning. Hats off to ya!
I would love to see 10psi too but easy does it-the adjustable external wastegate has provision for adjustable boost modulator-cheap 25 dollar part. last night i got the egt and narrow band a/f ratio set up. I want to see how hot she gets.
last night I put on some ducting bracing, made a a new windshield wiper bottle, installed the new custom ac hose. the ac is getting charged now. started on the grill. pics later
Last night I also did some 4000rpm sprints-way fun.
Is there anyone near you that has a supercharger that would be willing to compare? or even find a local drag strip? Ask around and see if anyone has a G-Tech accelerometer, it will give you something to compare modifications to and others to compare it to. I borrowed a G-tech and ran some numbers and was impressed, even if I guessed high on the weight. The intercooler ducting has me envious, I would love to fab up one for the supercharger. and run a smaller pulley :]
dusty, one more thought while you're at it - you might want to check into opening up your exhaust to 3" all the way back. Christo had commented a long time ago that he never experienced the full potential of the Safari turbo's until he did one with the bigger exhaust.
get it wrapped up 'cause you're due for the HG and then the valve bodies on the tranny

Great (and brave) job in putting together this build.
One observation that no one has touched on - I'm wondering if you could weld in a couple pieces of rod from the exhaust flange to the T4 flange to help support the weight. You have to remember that the entire manifold that you fabbed will get red hot and can sag with the weight of the turbo and wastegate hanging on it like a lever arm. A couple supports would help reduce the risk of your welded manifold cracking over time. You don't want to hit a pothole at 60mph and have your turbo fall off. Some cheap (chinese) ebay turbo manifolds had this problem and they added supports like this. It was good to see you incorporated a couple flex joints in your downpipe. Is your downpipe supported anywhere with hangers? This will reduce the stress on your manifold as well.
As an alternative to the Supra (Denso) fuel pump, the Walboro GSS341 fuel pump has about the same flow rate at 12V and draws half the amps. They usually go for under $120. Both are popular and will support about 500 hp.

That's exactly what happened to me in my VW Corrado turbo project car on Saturday. Except it wasn't a cheap ebay manifold, but a custom SS TIG'd one a guy made for me. Should be an easy fix, though it really highlights the loads that thing experiences -- turbo + exhaust weight, heat, and vibrations.
Regarding the fuel pump, a CIS inline fuel pump from an '80s Audi, VW, Volvo, etc. puts out about 120 psi, flows well, and is a cheaper alternative to the Walbro. You can use your OEM pump as a boost pump w/ the CIS one as your main pump.

Since gas prices are so high now, I am wondering if a Turbo makes power more effieciently therefore either raising the gas mileage if you drive like grandpa, or maybe same gas mileage but a lot more power?
When you get this thing dialed in, I would like to read some mileage figures, as well as power figures.
Is the intercooler water cooled, or just an air cooler?

Every 14.7psi (1 bar) of boost essentially doubles the airflow potential of your engine. So at 1 bar of boost your 4.5 liter engine just became a 9 liter engine (550ci+)...... At 2 bar it becomes a 13.5l iter engine and so on if you can keep the crankshaft and rods in the motor
