Hello, I have a 82, 22r pick-up that is going to be a DD. The brake and charge lights come on and go off over and over , and the motor stumbles a few times and stalls sometimes.
I did a quick search and did not see much.

Thanks Tim

I cannot speak for an 82 BUT the newer pickups flash those two lights when the charge from the alt goes down to an unacceptable level.

I would bet it is the same for your truck. Rebuild or replace alt asap unless. It could be a belt but I doubt that your belt is slipping that much to alter the current on those circuits.

I'm going to bump this thread and ask for a follow up.

My '84 4runner has similar symptoms, but on top of the lights and stumbling, the battery gets really over charged. I believe the stumbling in my case may be form the battery refusing to hold a charge after boiling so much. So far I have changed the voltage regulator and I drive with the lights and fan on to attempt to consume some energy. Is this an issue with the alternator or is there somewhere else to look?

Every time that has happened to me (alt + brake light) the issue was the alternator. Specifically, the brushes were shot. On my 1985 replacement of the brushes is a stupid easy  job. It takes me longer to get the alternator out than it does to replace the brushes. I now carry an extra set.

And talk about dredging up an old post!

You changed the regulator and you still have the issue? All I can think of is your battery is shot. Do you have a volt meter? And I mean a real volt meter that tells you where the alternator is charging while driving. It should read +/-14.5 volts with the engine off idle.

I would agree that the battery is shot. This morning I had to jump it, the headlights promptly got really bright and then off (possibly a fuse, but I haven't found it). Later today the truck died, and I filled the battery with water(very low and hot). When I got home today it was reading 15.9volts. I haven't had the truck for very long, but this is the 3rd battery so I know something is killing them.
