Ive been toying with the idea of using a troopy pop top roof conversion on my shorty 70 series. Side to side measure and back radius should be the same but the front would overhang as the troopy is longer of course, this would require some fabricating, but that isnt a big deal necessarily. The front does angle down slightly and this could require a slight rise to the rest of the top to accommodate front glass removal in the future. Its either this or cut the whole back off and build a camper from the cab back and overhanging the front similar to one you might put in the box of a truck. Thoughts?

A 'Mud member tried this on a 40 Series, namely an FJ40 he got in Colombia. It looked good and comfortable enough.
It is possible to do on a short wheelbase 70 Series. However, unlike a Troopy, a 70/71 may not have enough metal above the windshield. Chances are it is necessary to add a strip there, perhaps an upper windshield frame from a 75/78 Series Troopy.
Then there is cutting the bed frame. Maybe a section from the middle, in order to keep the front and rear. Yes, I am stating the obvious here. The cutting you have to make in an FRP top to make it fit into a soft top 70/71 Series comes to mind.
Now this would be an interesting project. A mini camper/overlander of sorts.

A 76 pop top might work better. I think a few companies make them.

I've been down this rabbit hole quite a few times over the years and always end up feeling like the premade options, cool as they are, aren't worth the cost for my use case. (I'm also in Canada where the cost is costlier).
On a 70 though? Wicked! Check out travel beast if you haven't already, on YouTube. His 74 frp with camper always gets me thinking. Then I debate just getting a single cab and a canopy camper....
Wish I'd gotten more pics of that German diy 79 for you. But even in that one, they'd have to flip the seats forward to make the bed long enough every night...

Be cool if you could keep the side profile intact. Extend over the front cabin like the Ute configuration transferring the strength required to the new frame behind the seats so you don’t stress the windshield. Be a cool project.

Suppose there’s Pros and cons with every configuration. Extend backwards and you have suspension upgrades, canter lever and exit angle problems. Sleeping from dash to rear cargo doors will require seating modifications.
