I know what f's up a paint job on moving vehicles better than anyone, having had to repaint more than a few cars and motor homes over the years, learn the lessons and remain in the industry.

Now, as to the tow-ability of this product : don't even think about it. Especially if your 40 has a prized paint job or is an over paint. Trollholes cover looks to be a well designed and tailored for a parked vehicle but for on the road, designing a tensioning system would be near impossible to prevent damage, especially at that price. If you want to vaporize paint, and maybe even find mystery holes in the sheet metal, go ahead and tow it for a couple hundred miles at freeway speed. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a stick.

Beyond that, it looks like a darned good product, well worth the price.

I can only envision a paint job being roughed up if the top isn't secured tightly enough when being towed. But that should be common sense, otherwise you could be driving with a parachute behind you for a few minutes then you're left with nothing but beautiful topless 40.

If it's loose enough where the top is aggressively cutting into the paint, then you obviously haven't secured the top well enough. Obviously it would require more than 6 total grommets to do the job effectively. Also if the top is also not tight enough, it will flop and eventually lead to tearing and being shredded by wind.

And that near impossible part sounds like a challenge.

Good to know. I'll bring it up at our next meeting and see what they say. I never had thought of using it for towing. More of when it's sitting. I'll get back on the towing thing next week.

I'm looking forward to any answers you get.

its not made of sand paper....

my soft top beats against the paint/bows... the paint is just fine.

with a bungee at each grommet this thing won't be going anywhere

self storing would be awesome. can't remember who was going to make it, but a company was making bronco trail tops that folded up into the top bikini section.

"I wouldn't think there would be any problems. This material is used for boat covers that are designed to be trailered. That being said I don't trailer my cruiser so someone will need to be the guinea pig on that one. If there is an issue send it back and I'll fix it so it isn't."

I have been building protective coverings, tensioned shade structures, boat covers and such for nearly 20 years. I am the leading supplier of motor home bras in the entire RV industry and have also produced the Tow Car Shield, for 18 years, which protects cars that are towed behind motor homes. I ship from Hawaii to Great Britain. I have several hundred patterns in my library and have sold through Camping World and many, many other dealers for 18 years. That is my credential for this discussion.

WeatherMax is an acrylic, solution dyed fabric manufactured in Spain. All acrylics are manufactured offshore. This woven fabric will hold its color and is coated to repel water. It is a great product but, it is also abrasive.

One problem with this. WeatherMax is made in Greenville, SC. Not the fabric the company I'm working with. I'm sure ITG owns other factories in many countries. I talked with my people. They said the biggest issue with towing with this top would be the wind getting scooped up by the doors. I might have come up with a solution to that as well.

All in good time. For now it's a use on the road at your own risk, try driving with it and you will need to use the force Luke, hard day on the trail and rain in the forecast you bet, in the driveway and your too lazy to get three friends to put the hard top on, no problem, got your neighbors cat pissing in your cruiser, get a dog and if he is worthless I have something that will fix the problem.

I don't want to make holes in cruisers, I want to prevent them.

I like that idea.

Those strips of aluminum with magnets I slid into the side curtains of my OCD top sure worked well. Hampers the foldability a bit but would seal against a lot of dust. Along with the grommets would stop a lot of flapping canvas.

Yes that would help. I've started adding this to the trail tops. Will help secure it.

My top was delivered Thursday. The quality looks to be real good and should be durable blasting down the highway on a trailer. Now I just need to get the truck done.

Marshall,

I would like to order a black top, but the link to your vendor page is broken. So, how do I order one?

Trail Top just arrived in time for a Southern California storm. Passing the rain test with flying colors. Top was specified for a Smittybilt roll bar on a 1971 FJ40. Fits nicely!

Interested in one that would fit a 78 w/ the factory roll bar and NO rear "hoop" (neither a 2nd rear hoop as part of the roll bar or use of a soft top hoop). I'd also like it to go over a bikini top. Possible?

Sorry. New software messed my links up.
Trollhole sorry I'm new to the mud forum so I don't know how to message you any other way but clicking on another topic that has nothing to do with my ? Any ways pops just gave me his 60 with original Engine set up and it was running fine for about 5 months and now it's trying to stall out when driving and in second gear get some type of slight jerky feeling as I try to accelerate... my e brake light has also been staying on the entire time running... battery light also flickered on me one morning. I put a volt meter on my battery that is new 12.5 when off and when I turn it on at idle it stays the same.. would a bad alt cause me to stall and do the jerk when trying to accelerate? Sorry for the long text
