Trip Report: Tour de Salt

We took an impromptu trip to explore the Salton Sea and surrounding areas southeast. Usually we just drive past it, but figured.. why not give it it's dues.

We packed in a bit for the time we had and of course it was good times as always.

There is an interesting documentary on the SS called "Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea" that documents the rise and fall of that area. During the 50's they tried to make it into a French Riviera type resort and movie stars would vacation there including Frank Sinatra, Sonny Bono and The Marx Bros.

Slab City! I completely forgot about that place. I had a sheriff tell me about a rifle shoot out that happened there back in the day. Apparently it was renowned for drugs and other unsavory things. By the sounds of it, they're trying to get it cleaned up and respectable like.

Really nice write up Dave. Good info. I always wonder about the history of the lake when we go to Truckhaven and wake up to the vista of the bright blue lake in the background.

I grew up camping, water skiing, and dirt biking at the Salton Sea. Every Easter, Thanksgiving, and other random weekends for years. I have great memories exploring all around there, though now it's just too toxic. Dave - you should contact Howser to see about taking over for him when he retires.
