Yeah i bought that black LED light for El Camino Del Diablo because scorpions are popular in that area. Funny, i didn't need it there in the Sonoran desert.. but here closer to home in the Imperial desert lol

Brent, yeah Dixie is uber mellow. I wish we could clone her man. I was stoked to see her lay in the water, she hates water!

So is the LED black light just to illuminate the scorpions (obvious from the pic) or do they also not like that particular light? Curious.

I don't think they like it... it kind of pissed him off actually. But i think any light would do that. He was living in a hole next to the fire pit.. so basically we invaded his home. We left him alone and never saw him the whole weekend after that.

From google search..
"All scorpions glow in the dark—even after death, even fossilized! A thin, transparent film (hyaline) in the outermost layer (cuticle) of their exoskeleton contains a protein that fluoresces. At night in the Arizona desert, you can see scorpions within a 20-foot radius by shining a black (ultraviolet) light around. They glow bright green-blue or green-yellow like scorpion jewels.

Newly molted scorpions don’t fluoresce. As the cuticle hardens, it glows more. The hylane skin toughens into an incredible substance. After hundreds of millions of years, after all other cuticle layers are lost, the hyaline layer remains, fossilized in rocks. It still glows.

We don’t know why scorpions fluoresce. Maybe it helps the antisocial creatures locate each other in the dark and either stay away (usually) or find a mate. Scorpions hunt at night and gladly eat fellow scorpions. In fact, mating is an extremely dangerous activity (to the smaller, usually male, partner)."

That looks excellent. Is there a place to launch a ski boat near where you were beach camping?

Awww Dixie! Wow a mellow Boston?? I didn't get as lucky with mine. You guys must be pretty mellow too. You know how dogs are with their owners (pack leaders). Looks like a great destination for sure. I wouldn't want to go there if there wasn't a river, yikes.

Very cool report.

I used law enforcement grade LED Black Lights during night runs into JTNP for "scorpion hunting". It's true, the "why" they glow is unknown. Another 'theory' is that (some) insects can see in a different light spectrum and can "see" the glowing scorpion and are attracted to them, making it easier for the scorpion to 'hunt'.

Wow, great trip Dave! Were you guys able to camp where the pictures were taken or is that a day use area? (I never saw any shots of tents or your rig.)

Boyd

Yeah you camp 3 car lengths from the water. Solar bathrooms, no water, picnic table, awning and grills.
Its $15.00 a night, which is uber cheap considering the destination. We've only been there once when someone
was there. Nobody really knows about the place (the way we like it!)

Here's how far we were from the water...
