Transmission solenoid going bad? and throttle/kick down cable question-calling Dan!

I am having a similar problem. I have a 94FJ80 and when I put it into drive it would get stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear (I could not tell). I could get it to downshift by mashing on the gas pedal or by putting it into reverse. I decided last month to replace my transmission (310k miles) b/c is was leaking terribly and it slipped in 2nd gear. The mechanic could not get the new transmission to shift at all without manually putting it into L, 1 and then drive. He tested all of the connections and kept getting different results. He is fairly confident the solenoids are fine. Since it is shifting manually does is sound like an electrical problem? My dash lights only work in R, L and 1 as the D light has never worked. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated as I'm on a very fixed budget.

See post#18. That is the last of updates for me on this issue. It still does it, I just live with it. If I don't back up first, then I just start off in first gear, then it's fine.

I highly recommend replacing the transmission computer located in the driver side kick panel. Sounds like that's the culprit. Cost me close to $2000 in repairs before we figured it out. I found a used one for $80 and after replacement it fixed all the issues you mentioned. Good luck

Not sure where else to post this... here seems appropriate :)
My 94 is skipping 2nd gear when it gets fully up to operating temp. It wont shift into 2nd if I move the shifter. It will try to go into 1sr if I move the shifter to 1st. Sometimes, it will be in drive when 2nd is selected, and overdrive when D is selected.

I have been reading posts for days now...no issues seem the same as this one.... hoping someone has experienced this particular issue before.

Have seen the solenoids, the 9 wire plug, shift cable, TCU, and also heat soaked TPS.

Thoughts?

Jumper the appropriate jacks in the diagnostic port so you can interrogate the trans ecu for codes.

Also, you can disconnect the electrical connector from the driver side of the transmission and then drive it by shifting manually starting off in low. If it shifts properly, the problem is electrical, either a short in the harness or faulty solenoid(s).

Did the problem manifest quickly for no apparent reason? Have you inspected your shifter linkage and transmission throttle (kickdown) cable? How about the fluid level and filter condition? If you don’t have a Toyota FSM, you will need to get one.

It did start suddenly . I have battery disconnected so no codes remaining :( my bad. Have new solenoids on the way, will post the results.

FSM was the 2nd thing I bought, land cruiser being the first. Fluid level good, and changed about 10kish ago with filter.

In addition, neither of the old solenoids I took out did anything when I applied 12v to them. Not even a noise. (I got the 1st 2, have the 3rd on the way , and probably should have got the 4th)

Test drive tonight.... seems to be good to go, I'll know for sure tomorrow on the way to work.

Still shiftin' good, Considering the issue resolved.
