Just completed the transmission flush via the cooler technique. Very easy to do. Just wanted to pass that along.

So the idea is to run the engine and pump out fluid, while adding fluid through the dipstick tube at the same time?

Fluid don't get in fast enough on the dipstick, are you sure your not gonna be low or out of fluid doing this? How fast the fluid go out? Thanks.

When I did my 62 it came out at a manageable speed into a waiting 5 gal container. We would shut her off periodically to fill. Never ran dry.

Edit - Looks like the op has this schemed out on the side of his bucket.

Marking the quarts on the bucket (or milk jug like I used) is the way to go. Pump out two, add two, repeat until fluid coming out is fresh. Works like a charm.

How many quarts required for this type of flush and fill?

Ok so as soon as you start the truck it will start to pump out?? Or do you have to put it in gear??

Also would draining it and then filling it back up and then flushing it be better???

Anyone got a link to a full step by step on how to do this??

Sure. It's in the FAQ thread which is at the top of this section of the forum. Scroll down to the maintenance section and you will find the link.

Tranny capacity is just over 14, but I usually grab 16 just to run a little extra through.

There are many posts on this. I was pleased at how easy it was. I marked the bucket in quarts so I knew what was being pumped out. First I drained the pan and got three quarts out...exactly. Put in three fresh quarts and proceeded to do the flush via the cooler on the front. Every two quarts out or so I would stop the engine and put two in until I was getting nice clean fluid out. The clear 3/8" hose is a must.

Ran about 14 quarts or so through the system. The hardest part was getting the clamp off the hose at the oil cooler. Be careful as the output tube bends easily.

Could you notice any distinct change in fluid color as you flushed it? In other words, was the fluid coming out early on nasty?

Good maintenance item and easy to do. Drop the pan and clean it and the filter before you start for the complete job.

Start and stop on the drain process. Start the engine drain one quart - add one quart. Helps to have someone sitting in the truck to start and stop.

:) Good job primer7!

Depending on year, there is about a gallon in the pan. By only draining/adding a quart, it is being mixed with 3 quarts of old/dirty fluid in the pan. Going to take a bunch of fluid to come close to a full change. Likely better off just doing repeated drain plug changes?

I pump a gallon out, add a gallon, repeat. When mine had water in it, to took 16 quarts to start clearing up and 20 quarts for the pink to be totally gone.
