Towing with AHC

I've just wired my 2002 LX for Brake Controller.
Read somewhere that you should run a separate ground wire to the Battery
but I think the recommendation of using a metal Dash Screw should work OK too.

I'm a complete newbie with towing a trailer and still learning.
I don't understand this about spacers or airbags. Would the LX tow OK
with a stock setup??????

BTW, wouldn't a Weight Distribution Hitch keep the weight off the rear of the LX ?????

Reviving this thread for any updates by previous posters. How did your rigs do towing? Air bags still holding up? I just ordered a set of airbags, and am considering the Andersen No-Sway hitch but it's spendy. But of course that's worth it to not crash. We'll be doing some cross-country trips with a 3,400lb trailer this summer.

Never a problem and it has been tested.

Been on 10 camping trips towing our Rpod 180.
Not nearly as heavy as previous post - our camper weighs a little over 3,000 lbs loaded.
Our LX470 is 4speed auto, no air bags - all stock.
Flat ground Interstate Highway is hardly noticeable its back there. Drive with Overdrive On.
Mountain towing, another story, but I pass Semi trucks, steepest hills I drop to 2-cd gear.
BTW, LandCruiserPhil how much weight are you towing?

Pictured too much. Our boat is about 5000lbs and the LX with VVTI can pull any hill at speed without issue.

"LX with VVTI can pull any hill at speed without issue." ... you've made me jealous now :)

At that tow weight the bags are a good addition but not necessary. Trailer brakes are a good idea for anything much heavier as well. If your trailer is wide, beefier side mirrors makes life much less stressful too. For about $1k you can get great mirrors, the bags, a good WD/AS hitch, and a BT or RF brake controller to avoid the wiring hassle.

Don't forget the breakaway switch for the trailer brakes too; safety first!

Just got a Riverside Retro trailer, it's 19' and 3,400 lbs dry. I've got air bags coming and will add the trailer brake controller since it's pre-wired. We have to go all the way to OK to pick one up, it seems like just about every small trailer within 12 hours of Denver is gone. Had dealer after dealer tell me they were selling 60-100 trailers per week over the last few weeks, and now they're waiting for the manufacturers to catch up. Seems people have caught on to this and used trailers are almost as much as new, it's pretty nuts. We were going to go tent camping but our friend got to the site a couple of days before us and found bear scat in the campground, and then the giant bear hanging around. I know they can get in a hard-side but it at least gives me a little comfort. My daughter says I have problems

The trailer is sea foam, and will match the 40 if we return her to stock color (sorry Kurt!). The engine bay is still groovy sea foam. Not that I could pull this with the 40

Reading some more threads, am I going to be okay using the factory tow-hitch in the rear cross-member? I don't have the lower frame-mounted hitch, but the insert in the rear bumper. I'm reading some people have trouble fitting a WD hitch in this. I've ordered the EAZ Lift per some recommendations in other Mud threads:

My first impression is that its a little weak.
You can get a much better hitch from E-Trailer for $100 - $150

Some folks like to avoid that EAZ Lift hitch for two reasons:

1. There is no hard, solid link between the weight distribution bars and the trailer (notice how chains keep them "in place")
2. The anti-sway system is a wear and tear item.

For these reasons I've been happy with this: Husky 32218

@Max.Powerzz I'd double check but I think I remember the integrated, in bumper hitch was not meant to be used with a weight-distribution hitch.

Love that Kavik-made aluminum front bumper Phil! Wish he replies to my email.

Anyhow how’s your transmission temperature hauling that beautiful boat on various speeds?

He not going to reply to you. Mud even locked the thread and you cant take it. lol

As for towing I never use OD on the 5 speed or the older 4 speed.

Awesome, I've been researching trailers myself and taking a really hard look at geo pros with bunk beds for the kiddos... seems like everyone is trying to take road trips I've been seeing many articles on rv sales spiking and rentals of rvs... i might hold off until next year when they get all returned once the excitement has worn off and they all hit the used market lol.
