We use Chevys and dodges at work. The new Chevys run like a bat out of hell and the dodge is a torque monster. DD I'd expect 15-16 out of a modern 4x4 diesel. Add exhaust and programmer and you boost mpg's and power. Your general cost of ownership will be more with a diesel. But by the time you factor in the f-250 note and insurance and the FJ note and insurance into a new tow rig you will come out ahead. The Chevy 2500 gas with the 6.0 is a good motor, and the 6.2 from ford is a good motor too.

I will state wholeheartedly for the record, I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT AGAIN!!! And not just for the issues with the F250. My POS company vehicle is also a FORD. FORD can kiss my ass!! And also for the record, we have no note on either the F250 nor the FJC. Looking to replace them with a 2500 that has as little out of pocket as possible. Not really looking to take on a note right now if possible but you never know.

As for getting 15 - 16 mpg, that's worse than we get with the FJC and the fuel would add up to alot more. I have never really tested the mpg on the F250 because I don't drive it enough. I do know that I get 10 - 11 mpg towing Clifford with it. I am 99% sure the winner will be a Chevy / GMC 2500 CC 4X4 with the 6.0l gas engine that is used but maybe we go the new route if all the used ones are high mileage.

:lol: You sound like my old man when talking about Fords!

I think you would be lucky to get 15 mpg while DD'ing a 4x4 gasser capable of towing Clifford. :meh:

The way I see it, if I am going to have a truck it is going to be a diesel. I went through a period where I changed trucks like I change underwear. My f350 gets better mileage than any truck gas or diesel that I have ever owned except for my isuzu. That is still only about 17, but it is a dually crew cab, will tow anything I could ever want to tow, is heavy enough it rides like a caddy, and has a 8 foot bed that never has to be made.

my favorite site for getting real MPG comparisons is FUelly.com All averages are uploaded by the users, so it is all actual pen and paper averages, not government ratings or anything.

For all 3/4 chevys: http://www.fuelly.com/car/chevrolet/silverado 2500 hd the ratings on this page include diesels in the average.

this is for 2011 chevy 3/4 tons
http://www.fuelly.com/car/chevrolet/silverado 2500 hd/2011/gas v8

2010
http://www.fuelly.com/car/chevrolet/silverado 2500 hd/2010/gas v8

best mileage anyone is reporting for a gas engine either of those two years is 14.3 and there is no mention of if it was 2wd or 4wd. worst average was 10.7 mpg

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bikertrash/f350-super-duty this is my average with the f350, almost no towing though.

So to me it is better to pay a bit more at the pump and go further per gallon, than to buy cheeper fuel and still pay more because of how much you are burning.

admit it --------- U like the smell of diesel in the morning:D

I wish I had a diesel. More specifically the new Duramax with an egr delete and def delete. 4in strait pipe and edge programmer. It's like a dream.

LOL, I can't say I mind at ALL :)

Mike don't dodge the Ram's, LOL, I love my Cummins and Big Family friendly Mega-Cab it comes with the Hemi option as well. Best I came up with doing research is anything after 08 were bug free they had some issues getting along with Mercedes a few years 06/07 but they erased that by 08. Albert just made the transition from the diesel and is now towing with the Hemi after they totaled his diesel rig we'll compare mileage when we get up the Tennessee hill country Saturday :)

The 5.7 Hemi is a beast of a motor. The 6.7 cummins is a torque mongor. We have a few ambulances that have them, and they will do the deed and ask for more. The run 24/7 and have hardly any problems out of the cummins or Duramax.

Good to hear :)

I'm a little biased to the Duramax though. Even with a 10,000 box on the back we can still Launch it ;D

I've got 17.500 while rolling down the road, and I can still open a can on it.. :D

Thanks

The smell, the noise, when I am driving like a hooligan the smoke ;D

except for the repair costs what's not to love?

Apparently I have been bragging on my dually too much though, throttle position sensor went out and had to idle it most of the way home. The kicker is they don't sell just the sensor, you have to change the whole pedal assembly. 331 after TT&L.

Edit: ok phone, why you attached the picture twice?

Curious.......is Albert's Hemi a 1500 or 2500? Crew cab or mega cab?

I am trying to figure out which way to go. I am going to drag Clifford and Hachi up to the truck scales to weigh them. After doing lots of research, the 2500 as a DD is gonna be a gas guzzler. Since I will only be towing the gn set-up a few times a year, I am thinking a Tundra with the 5.7 or a Silverado with the 5.3. They are rated for 15 mpg and 17 mpg, respectively and they both can tow right at 10k. I would suspect that it would be a little more with a gn hitch but I can't find towing capacities for either with a gn.

Blue 1500 crew cab.

Thanks Cody Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD

Ill say this, my 1500 will tow the nuts off my trailer and truggy but the tundra would be your best bet. More HP and TRQ. My ex tows a three horse gooseneck with it and the few times I drove it it was a nice rig. Airbags help a lot too. As far as a towpig the tundra would be a good DD and weekend puller. Nothing will beat a turbo diesel but the tundra or chevy 2500 6.0 gas would be my choices

I am getting 15-19 MPG and I think that LL's mega cab is pulling down the 20's mpg. So the fuel mileage will be about the same with similar mods and the oil changes may cost more but you can get more miles out of each change.
I think you would do fine with a 2wd Dodge, and would :D everyday behind the wheel of an 06/07 Duramax.

Well, the 1/2 ton is gonna be a no-go. I kinda knew it in the back of my mind but it was confirmed today. A friend works for Michelli Scales and he brought over the portable scales they use. Clifford, with Hachi on board, weighs in at a healthy 12,350lbs......and that is without any extra gear. Another 3/4 ton is on the horizon. Back to the drawing board.............:bang:

Keep the FJ, trade the F250 for a RV, sell Clifford and get a car trailer. Easy enough.
