How many miles have you gotten on a 22re. I just purchased an 89 mini with 212,000 and wonder how much life it's got left. It's got a 3 inch body lift and 32" BFG on it. Got it for $1000.

'86 4Runner.

Engine never opened up, except for a new t-chain and water pump at 100K. Original clutch. Still running fine.

256k for a 22re 274k for a 22r

The bottom end let go on the 22r and the timing chain let go on the 22re....

'88 22re 250,000 or so before bottom end problems, '83 22r 325,000 before bottom end problems. I can not blame the engines for dying, because I consistently overload the trucks and cause oil starvation during rock crawling. These trucks get good maintenance, but lots of abuse. I blew the engine in my tow rig, sold some parts off of it and have been using the 4runner for tow duties ever since. It is not uncommon for my 4runner to run around 4000 rpm from Kerrville to Sonora twice a month towing a car-hauler with a toyota pick-up, or a jeep on it. I drive like a jackass.

I've got 255,xxx on mine. The only thing I've ever replaced is the timing chain.

'85 EFI runner 250,000, timing chain is only maintainence done that I am aware of. running great

I have the 3.0 in my 89 4Runner and it runs like a champ, having some transmission trouble, but to get 260,000 miles on it the V6 and outliving some of the 22re's is something im proud of...:)

Now, if the bottom end goes out can you rebuild it? Or should you rebuild before this happens? Or do you hae to get a new engine?

Before a 22R/RE will "Let go" it will be making a hell of a racket, so you will have warning for the most part. The exception is if you overheat it. Best to rebuild before the engine breaks itsself though. If you throw a rod, you will probably be looking for a new block and crank.....

Thanks 2nd Gen

I had a '87 runner with a 22re. I T-boned a guy at 30 mph at about 200,000 and the engine never stopped running. (His fault, pulled out in front of me.) The insurance totaled it, bought it back and kept driving it for several thousand more. Still ran fine when I sold it.

had the EXACT truck you have 89 4x4 3inch bl, and 32's, and put a hole in the bloack at around 260,000....yours doesnt happen to be a faded silver w/a shell w/no back glass is it?? lol

Nope, it's a faded black, no shell :)

22R with 260k mi. Timing chain and guides replaced at 240k. 165-170psi on all cylinders. No oil usage or leaks.

Anyone know how much a rebuild for a 22re would run?
