what do you think? Stamps still aren't perfect, as they don't have the circles. But I'll get that as well with time. Funny, I wasn't really interested in one for my trucks at the start of this, but now I think I definitely need to order the tools & put one full roll into each of my trucks. They are just too cool not too.
Best,
Abe

Abe, if you are considering buying the new Toyota tools, you will want to confirm the replica roll screwdriver loops are large enough. The new screwdrivers have larger diameter handles than the originals. Also, the soft handles on the new screwdrivers tend to grip the inside of the loops making it more difficult to get them through. Not a problem with the smooth finish on the originals.

For the refurbished roll in the first post, the new screwdrivers fit because the canvas designer had them in hand and was able to adjust the loops to fit the new tools. For the replica roll shown in post #60, the new screwdrivers do not fit in the loops.

The new screwdrivers appear to be Vessel Megadora brand. The Vessel catalog indicates the following diameters for both the 900 and 930 (tang through) series:
  • 150 x 8 mm - 36
  • 75 x 5.5 mm - 30
  • 100 x #2 - 34
Compared to the diameter of the original screwdrivers from post #27:
  • 150 x 8 mm - 33
  • 75 x 5.5 mm - 25
  • 100 x #2 - 28
Have not had problems with other tools fitting the tool rolls. The bottom hammer loop is fairly snug with some new hammers, but they do fit.

Large Tool Roll Review

Here's an early FJ40/FJ45 tool roll that is currently posted on e-Bay (no affiliation). Let's take a closer look to see what's there. The OEM tool kit inventory identified in my signature line includes reference information and more details about this and other Land Cruiser tool kits.

$_57 b.JPG

In addition to the tools photo, the auction listing includes a photo of the closed tool roll and the content list. The content list is identified as a replica.

The kit is identified as being complete, however that can not be confirmed from the one photo. The discolored content list window is identified and it is noted that the grease pump has never been opened.

Given the one photo provided it is not possible to get a complete understanding of the kit. If you are considering this kit, request additional, quality photos of the tools (fronts and backs) removed from the canvas roll.

Canvas Roll - This is the large canvas roll that came with Land Cruisers up through early 1969. This is the later version of that roll, designed to fit the 1-piece lug wrench. The later version has top loops #3 and #4 even, and bottom loops #1 and #3 are marked. This tool roll dates between 1963-69.

Hammer - A One Hand (OH) hammer, which is correct for this kit. The 450G and 1 marks are visible but difficult to see in the photo. A close-up of this hammer appears above in OEM Hammer - Part 2.

Pliers - Pliers should have a slotted screw, reinforced jaw, and be marked TEQ. These pliers appear to be a much later version. While the other tools in the kit show some signs of use, the pliers appear unused. The correct pliers show up on auction sites occasionally.

Lug Wrench - The 1-piece lug wrench, marked Toyota Motor, with a symmetric pry tip is correct for this kit. Should be marked Made in Japan on the back.

Adjustable Wrench - The wrench pictured is an early version with the TEQ logo and raised oval pad on the handle. This wrench was included with the earlier version of the large tool roll (1958-63) and some carried over to this version of the large tool roll as well.

Spark Plug Wrench - From what is visible, it looks like the wrench with the loop handle, which is correct for this kit.

Spanner Set - Looks like 6 wrenches, which is correct. These have the recessed handle and should be marked with the TEQ logo and Toyota Motor. Can't tell from the photo. Later version of this set from the medium tool roll is marked Toyota Motor without the TEQ logo. The wrenches are not aligned in the photo which suggests they are not held by a wrench clip. There should be a blue wrench clip marked TEQ.

Screwdrivers - The kit should have 3, wood handle screwdrivers, 150mm, 75mm and #2 cross-head. The kit appears to include these 3, although the #2 tip is not clear. The screwdrivers should be marked Toyota Motor on the shank, but this marking does not appear in the photo. The later version of these screwdrivers, included with the medium tool roll, are marked Toyota Motor on the ferrule. The screwdriver handles can have condition issues, chips or cracks. With the handles hidden by the loops, the condition can not be verified.

Grease Pump - The grease pump for this kit should be marked Toyota Motor with the TEQ logo. Can't confirm based on the photo. Later version of the grease pump from the medium tool roll is marked Toyota Motor without the TEQ logo. There should be a straight nozzle and bent nozzle with chuck included in the bag, but these are not visible. The grease pump bag is torn at the bottom, nozzle(s) may have escaped.

Engine Adjust Kit - The green/blue, plastic pouch is the engine adjust kit. This pouch has the TEQ logo. The TEQ marked pouch was included in the the the 1958-63 large tool roll, and some carried over to this version of the large tool roll. The kit contains 5 pieces: 4-leaf feeler gauge, spark plug gap tool, 8/9 mm ignition wrench, red handle points file and yellow handle voltage tester. Unclear from the photo whether the engine adjust kit is complete.

Operations Manual - The large tool roll contained the Operations Manual (Owner's Manual) as item #13. The manual pictured is from 1970-71 and was included in some of the very late versions of this kit. The manual looks to be in very good condition. Since the canvas shows wear/use, it is unlikely this manual is original to this kit, unless it was stored separately. The later manual also does not fit with the early adjustable wrench and early engine adjust kit. These earlier tools suggest the kit dates around 1963-65.

Content List - This looks like the replica list included with rick_d replica tool rolls. These can be identified by the #12 Miscellaneous entry.

Canvas Roll Condition - Shows wear, dirt and stains but nothing extreme. Appears to be a few small holes/wear in the flap below pockets #6 through #11. Pockets and loops are attached and not ripped. The plastic window is discolored. Overall condition looks good based on the photos.

Tools Condition - Some light surface rust is apparent on the hammer and the large screwdriver blade. None of the tools appear to be damaged (hammer handle intact, screwdriver blades not bent) Screwdriver handles condition can not be confirmed from the photo. Pictures of both the front and back of the tools are needed to verify their condition.

Overall - several possibilities for this tool kit. Additional, quality photos with detail would help clarify whether this is an original/period correct tool roll, or pieced together kit:

A. Original kit, missing an original piece (pliers), possibly missing wrench clip, grease pump nozzles, engine adjust kit pieces.

B. Period correct kit, pieced together using tools from separate large tool rolls, possibly missing pieces (wrench clip, grease pump nozzles, engine adjust kit pieces).

C. Combined kit, pieced together using tools from large tool roll (hammer, lug wrench, adjustable wrench, spark plug wrench, engine adjust kit), possibly some medium tool roll items (spanner set, screwdrivers, grease pump), other (pliers), and possibly missing items (wrench clip, grease pump nozzles, engine adjust kit pieces).

Edit: sold for reserve price of $1,500

Fantastic, thorough and carefully objective critique. Thanks!

Care to go in the opposite direction and attach a subjective dollar value to that kit, wscbill?

That would be a tough one. Don't think my crystal ball is up to it. :)

There has been lots of bidding action so far, will be interesting to see where it ends up.

Here's some tool rolls that were record breakers in their time. A common factor was that the sellers' listings included many and detailed photos that did a great job of showcasing their kits.

This current kit appears to be quite nice. I'm not sure that the specific tool details mentioned in my review would make much difference to most potential buyers. These old tool rolls have a certain charisma, and for anyone with FJ40 fever, it's a 'got to have' item. Get a couple of those folks in a bidding war, and who knows where it could go.

Can anyone advise me on how to clean an old tool bag. Mine says Toyota Motor Company and Teq as well, will post up pics

The zipper bag material is vinylized canvas. I use Simple Green all over the outside to remove the grease, oil, dirt. Use a soft bristle brush with a light touch. Then go over it again to spot clean areas that need additional attention.

After that, put the bag in a tub with mild laundry detergent, like Woolite. Go over the inside and the binding with the brush, and let it soak for 30 min. Rinse completely. Re-shape the bag and use balled-up tissue paper at the ends to hold the shape.

To dry, place the bag up-side-down over a small narrow box (a small USPS flat rate box works), sitting up on its long edge and let it air dry.

I've not been able to completely remove the black stains on the outside of these bags caused by the black rubber hold-down band. Tried several things that did not work.

Use a different approach and lots of caution for canvas tool rolls. These are difficult to clean because the canvas/binding may be weak due to the effects of age, exposure to UV, moisture etc. The fabric becomes quite brittle and is easily torn or damaged. Since canvas will shrink when wet, and this may further damage the tool roll, washing is not recommended. Even if the tool roll is not damaged further by washing, the loops and pockets may shrink such that the tools no longer fit. I use a small vacuum brush to remove loose material from the canvas, and leave it at that.

The Toyota Motor TEQ bag came with FJ40s from 1972-82. Two basic versions, the first with the yellow jack handle, later with the brown cast jack handle. The zipper bag style was preceded by the medium vinyl tool roll, and followed by the Toyota Motor bag for 1983-84.

Medium Tool Roll (Canvas) – OEM - Part 1

The Medium Canvas Tool Roll replaced the Large Tool Roll in 1969 and was standard equipment in FJ40's through 1971. The medium canvas roll was followed by a vinyl roll version that contained many of the same tools.

27500-1410565988-b3a452a2e3d01a58b5924e0e5609e611.jpg

The canvas roll contains eight small pockets and one large pocket. The small pockets are separated into two groups of four with a gap in between. The outside edges of the tool roll, flap, and large pocket are bound with bias-cut binding.

Although not part of the tool kit, the short (26cm) jack handle was located in the large pocket along with the grease pump.

Folding the roll in thirds at the grease pump and at the gap make a compact bundle, easily secured using the canvas strap and adjustable slide buckle.

27501-1410566003-302fc8f1edfb5c2485fd88e13b8586fd.jpg

The medium tool roll contains fewer tools than the large roll. The hammer and engine adjust kit from the large roll are not included. The medium roll has no provision for a Content List, and although an Operator Manual was provided with the vehicle, the manual was not located in the tool kit as before.

See HoffLarr's Ultimate Tool Roll thread for a later version of the Medium Canvas Tool Roll, with most tools still sealed in their original packaging.

The Grease Pump is marked TOYOTA MOTOR on one side and MADE IN JAPAN on the other. Two nozzles are included, one straight and one bent with a chuck. The grease pump does not use a cartridge and must be filled manually. The Toyota Parts Catalog identifies the grease pump capacity as 150cc. A manufacture's mark does not appear on the grease pump, although what may be a date code, E9 (May 1969) is stamped into the top flange. The pump features 4 knurled bands and a stepped barrel for ease of handling. The grease pump was originally sealed in a plastic bag along with the individually wrapped nozzles. The same grease pump in the large tool roll is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR.

The Lug Wrench is one-piece that fits 21mm nuts. It is marked TOYOTA MOTOR on one side, MADE IN JAPAN on the other, and it has a symmetric pry tip. The socket on this wrench shows no marks or scratches from use. The same lug wrench is found in the large tool roll.

The Adjustable Wrench is 250mm marked TOYOTA MOTOR. The wrench is marked with the HITnn mark. Since the adjustment gear is held with a slotted screw, there is no L or R below that mark. The same wrench in the large tool roll is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR.

The 200mm Pliers are marked with the TEQ logo on the front, KTC PAT (Kyoto Tool Co.) mark on the back, and MADE IN JAPAN on the inside of the handle. These pliers use a slotted screw, and have a reinforcing ridge on both jaws. A later version of this kit has pliers marked TOYOTA instead of TEQ. Instead of MADE IN JAPAN on the inside of the handle, these later pliers are marked JAPAN, in smaller letters, beneath TOYOTA. The same pliers with the TEQ logo are found in the large tool roll.

Medium Tool Roll (Canvas) – OEM - Part 2

The Spanner Set consists of 5 open-end wrenches: 8x10, 10x12, 12x14, 14x17, and 19x22 held by a blue, metal wrench clip. The wrenches have recessed handles marked TOYOTA MOTOR on the front and NICKEL-CHROME-VANADIUM on the back. This same style wrench is found in the later version of the large tool roll marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR.

The Toyota Parts Catalog specifies that early (3/69-8/69) versions of the medium canvas tool roll came with a 6 wrench set, consisting of 8x9, 10x12, 12x14, 14x17, 17x19, 21x23. This is the same assortment that came with the large tool roll.

The blue wrench clip has no Toyota marking, but is marked with the KTC patent. The same clip in the large tool roll is marked TEQ.

Three wood handle Screwdrivers are included in the kit: 150mm, 75mm, and #2 cross-head. These are tang-through screwdrivers with pinned ferrules and each is marked TOYOTA MOTOR on the ferrule. The large tool roll includes similar screwdrivers, except with TOYOTA MOTOR marked on the shank.

See the Part 1 and Part 2 OEM Screwdrivers threads for additional information and details about Toyota wood handle screwdrivers.

The Spark Plug Wrench has a loop handle and is marked TOYOTA MOTOR with MADE IN JAPAN beneath in smaller letters. Between horizontal lines marked on the back is 20.6. A later version of this kit has the spark plug wrench with the separate bar handle. Although the markings are the same, this later wrench has 4 holes spaced at 90 degrees around the top edge. The same loop handle wrench is found in the large tool roll.

Two different markings are used for the medium canvas tool roll. The early version displays a positive image TEQ logo on the far left of the strap, with TOYOTA MOTOR on the right. Later, a negative image TEQ is located to the right of the strap along with TOYOTA MOTOR. The time frame for the marking change is unknown. It is unclear whether the different markings are associated with different kit content; the Toyota Parts Catalog indicates 3/69-8/69 kits include a different set of spanners.

Medium Canvas Roll.jpg

27525-1410566406-89d8f4652d29a1fb1bfd2a496ebcfded.jpg

The Toyota Parts Catalog also shows a hammer as part of this tool kit, although sale brochures show the kit without a hammer. There is no available pocket in the canvas roll for the hammer, although the gap between the two sets of pockets could accommodate a hammer handle. Perhaps the hammer was initially planned, but later dropped.

The Medium Canvas Tool Roll appeared in the 1972 Land Cruiser sales brochure.

OEM Inspection Lamp

The Inspection Lamp was a standard item on FJ40s and other Land Cruisers. Although the Inspection Lamp would seem to be a tool, it was not included as part of the OEM tool kits.

The Inspection Lamp plugs into a socket that was located under the dash on the passenger side firewall for early FJ40s; around 9/71 the socket was moved to inside the glove box.

The early inspection lamp has a brown cord and brown plastic socket in a metal base, with a wire cage. It includes 2 wire hooks, one at the base, the other fixed at the top of the cage.
27945-1411777365-663193da54e36b01260a02c2e7005be0.jpg

The inspection lamp was packed in a blue, vinyl bag with a snap cover. The bag was marked with the TEQ logo near the snap. The bag and the plug were also marked with the manufacturer's TR logo, Tokai Rika Co., of Nagoya.
27946-1411777381-d72049261a1dc4af65a5523a9c37c6b6.jpg

A new FJ40 owner would find the later black inspection lamp in the glove box, inside a somewhat different blue vinyl bag.
24198-1384704131-21408272666ab12e67df9e776e7f0f5e.jpg

This later inspection lamp has a black cord, with a black plastic socket and base. The wire cage is smaller than the earlier version and the center ring and the 2 hooks are now flat metal instead of wire. The hook at the top of the cage can move independently.
24199-1384704131-4d8b7e1a8027bb8575b448b3572cfd5f.jpg

The other hook is located on the cord and can be moved as needed. The plug is marked with the TR logo.
24200-1384704210-2bbae76fe3a02e08366302294cffb28d.jpg

Inspection lamps (12 volt) are still available from Toyota, part number 81370-60010; the 24 volt version, 81370-60040 is discontinued. The current lamp is very similar to what was included with later FJ40s except the hook on the cord is no longer provided.
24201-1384704210-dc7841ae2db7353b4d7284350cc0643a.jpg

Inspection lamp bulbs are listed in both 12 and 24 volt versions:

  • 99132-11230 - 12 volt 23 watt (available)
  • 84999-10030 - 24 volt 25 watt (discontinued)
Example replacement bulbs:

  • 12 volt - 1073
  • 24 volt - 7597
Images in this post are from Mud(dkdnt232, Chula Vista 71 FJ40) and eBay(sydneycityparts)

I need to find the later clear bag for the new light. They are still available from Toyota but don't come with the bag.
