Damn dude awesome work.

I know somebody else who has a set of volvo portals sitting around.

I hope this thread convinces them to get to work and stop talking. :D

I also ordered a rear panhard adjustable insert fron Slee because even with all the measuring I did my rear axle sits to the right about 1/4" to 3/8".

You probably know a hell of a lot more about this than I do, but this subject was brought up a few months back and the concensus was that the axle sitting to one side or another at idle height wasn't necessarily an issue, it's where the axle sits when the suspension is stuffed that should be taken into account.

Geometrically speaking, if the axle is centered at full stuff, it probably wont be perfectly centered at normal height.

Well as these are portal and he kept the stock spring height. This is a non-issue as the pan-hards are at stock "level" as the axle housing would be in relatively the same position in relation to the frame as the stock axle. I am guessing the welded bracketry is off a touch here/there and so the arm needs extending/shortening.

Exactamendo!

TiredIronGRB, great work. One thing that I noticed and wondered about is that in the side photo above it looks like the axles are a little too far inboard for your tires. In the front it looks like they could move forward a bit and in the back it looks like they could move back a bit. Do you have any rubbing at full turn up front, especially when they are stuffed?

George...

Wonderful job and a great project for others to see in development. I think you have made many of us envious beyond belief!!

Thanks for sharing.

THat's rad!! Got any pics of the linkage on the front axle?

I wish you would show some more pics and some details on what exactly you had done to those axles, and also how you plumbed up the locker valves. Your truck is awesome, and this opens up a whole nother world of opportunities in tire size for us cruisers. Good luck with whatever your future mods are, so far your doin a kick ass job.

All the linkage is stock FJ80, I just cleaned off all the Volvo brackets then carefully cut the brackets off the stock axles and fitted them to the Volvos. The draglink was just like the FJ but larger so I cut it off and slid the FJ draglink down in it and welded it once I had the steering wheel straight.

Here are some I've posted earlier, when I get caught up on everything I've neglected to build this thing I hope to do a detailed write up on it.

Question.....what did you do with the old axles?

THanks, i saw most of those. I was just looking for a couple more pics of the control arms actually mounted to the axle.

Anyone want to explain to a newb what exactly a portal axle is/does? Looks like a great buildup but how does he get 5inches of alift with just replacing axles? Sorry for being king noob but someone throw me a bone :D
