Tireiron,

very impressive very well thought out especially the reuse of the third row seat brackets... keep up the good work...

TiredIron, that is pretty sweet. I really want to do portals as well but have some reservations.

Do you think the Volvo units are going to hold up? Or are you not planning hardcore rock crawling. I want to run 44's and not sure if they will last.

Also, are you coverting the brakes or sticking to drums?

And on the front, do you think the stock 2 link system will be enough to locate the axle? With the extra leverage of the portal units, are you worried about axle wrap?

I wouldn't go any larger than 38s with the stock Volvos, but they are very strong axles, I ran 38s on the Volvo 6X6 I had and it did great even on extremely rocky offcamber trails.

No, I'm keeping the drums. The ones on the 6X6 actually stopped better than the ones on the FJ ('91 model). I am putting all new shoes, wheel cyls, and springs on them.

I sure hope so!...I think it will do fine, remember I'm only running the 3FE and I usually just crawl over obstacles and don't hammer on them. If I don't make it on the second attempt I just bypass it, I'm old enought to not worry about ego or peer pressure on the trail I proved my ignorance years ago and have the aches and scars to prove it. :D

TiredIron,
You are get my vote for sickest buildup in a longtime.
This thread is pure pleasure to read.
What kind if army surplus did you did that 6x6 out of?

pain

 How can that look so good and fairly simple at the same time(except for the 427 little things you had to solve), wow I want that set up bad. How little lift can you get away with those 38s
I have jealousy cramps right now.

That is something. 5" of lift just by putting the axles in, hmmm gets me thinking, put a 6" Slee on top of that with some spacing maybe, and you're looking at a solid 11-12.5" lift (adding is so much fun). That would be insanity. Nice rig like what you have done to it, and the 6x6 must kick ass.

Here's some pics from today, I only got to work on it a few hours.

These are the flange adapters that I had made at Universal Machine & Tool Co. in Kingsport. They do awesome work but they also charge for it

This shot was taken with the full weight on the axle, the lift in only holding up the rear of the truck.

STOP the pain. I am more jealous than Othello

Look at the clearance under the diffs!!!!

How many inches of clearance from the ground do you have now?

I really like the Bogger tire. I'm guessing you like them also. ;)

Do you have many miles on them in your Volvo or any other vehicles?

I pretty much finished today, I still need to put the new shoes, wheel cyls, and springs on. I also ordered a rear panhard adjustable insert fron Slee because even with all the measuring I did my rear axle sits to the right about 1/4" to 3/8". I took it out for a test ride through the pasture, in low range it crawls really good and the vacuum controls for the lockers work great. In high range it's seems a little lower but not too low.
The ride height worked out even better than I had hoped, 17" to the dif, 25" to the rocker, I may have to keep this thing:D

This is a utility light for a tractor (mounts on the fender), I thought it would work as a winch light instead of using the headlights.

I started on it Tuesday at lunch, then all day Wednesday, half a day Thursday and Friday, then all day today.

The axles run between $3K and $4K depending on condition and what comes with them. I got mine from a running vehicle that had extensive body damage but ran out great, I also got five wheels and the vacuum controls for the lockers.
