Another thing to consider might be that you have more of a restricted view with the spare on the passenger side if you're trying to back up. Might not be a big deal though.![]()
Tube puts it on the left, correct?

For all that I like originality, if I hadn't found the Metric TLC one in stock I would have gone to a frame-mounted unit. I'm not crazy about having that much weight bouncing around on the original plate carrier, but I'll have to see how much it moves when I get the top and doors back on.My search for a decent panel style carrier begins then... The Metric TLC carrier looks great. Says out of stock unfortunately...

Just for clarification.... I have an early '75 that has the holes in the driver's side body but none on the sill for a latch (new tub, etc by PO). I am in need of a carrier. I know my particular model came with the flat style carrier but, as mentioned, these are harder to come by than the tubes and I don't like the rubber bumper that presses on the door. Other threads have stated that the hinges of a tube and flat driver's side carrier all match except for the bottom holes of the top hinge. Everyone talks about not wanting to drill additional holes into their tub, could the holes in the top hinge be modified - redrilled or slotted- to fit the tub? And then just place the latch?
Just weighing options....

Coinoperated, if you do get an opportunity to see if the latch on the tube style will locate properly on the sill, let me know!
Thanks all for the input... I'm leaning toward trying to "persuade" a tube style onto my '75.
Honestly... I've never laid hands on a tire carrier of either type. I really don't have a preference, just want a spare in tow. It's just seems easier to locate a tube style carrier. Here are some measurements. Again- a 2/75 fj40.
Thanks to all
