timing trouble

just installed new timing set in my 89 excab 22re. and by the book it calls for 0 but i cant get it anywhere close, its about 12deg. off one tooth eighther way and you cant see the mark and wont run. engine has 215,000 on her now any ideas would help thanks.

I think the 22re is supposed to be at 5 degrees.

short the TE1 and E1 connnections on the diagnostic port and time it to 5° BTDC

wait- oh, it wont run.
did you doulbe check the marks on the crank and cam?

Pull the #1 spark plug, cover the hold with your thumb and then crank it over, there should be air puffing out of it. If not, you may be 180* off.... and have no compression.

If the idle doesn't noticeably change when you short the connector check your TPS.
