I dont think i did any thing wrong except one little detail. the new cam gear is solid, so i couldnt use an extention to hold the gear while i torqued it to 80 pounds.

so i impact gunned it on. i have no idea what it could be torqued to.

now its making a funky sound. what do you think is wrong?

instead of me tring to type out the sound, click the link.

the replacement kit i got from napa has a solid cam gear. no holes. the stock cam gear, has somthing like six holes drilled in it.

dude, you know how long it took me to find THAT spesific oil cap?! more than a year! seemed like every truck i found at the scrap yards had either the Stant aftmkt one, or the stock checkered one.
when i bought the '80 it had all kinds of parts including that cap. i was so frikkin happy.

so NO you cant have it. its mine, all MIIIIINE!! :flipoff2:

Hey, I said I would TRADE..... :D I'm not out to screw you or anything..... What's the cap off of? A cruiser? Mine says oil on it (Much less confusing..... ehhh???)

Ok I get the solid gear.... I doubt that's the problem, if you gunned it on... I think you're going to have to take a look....

Holy crap, that sounds AWFUL. Sounds like the chain is rubbing on something that it's not supposed to. Did you install metal guides, or plastic ones? What about the tensioner?

I have the same 710 cap (think about it), I got it off my old '84 when I parted it out. I have another one on the shelf in my garage, grabbed it off a truck that I found in a junkyard. Hmmm... maybe I'll put it on eBay... :)

Wristy,

That doesn't sound good. Here are a few ideas. I don't know how realistic they are:

1. Your chain wasn't installed between both dampers.

2. One or both sprockets were installed backwards. (I don't know if this is possible.)

3. One of the longer timing chain cover (or water pump) cover bolts is in the wrong hole and rubbing against the timing chain.

4. Your chain tensioner is not working properly (i.e. you left tape on it when reinstalling the chain or something is fouling up the oil passage.)

I'm guessing 3 or 4.

Good Luck

ok i took the cover off.
nothing is abnormal looking.
every thing is in place.

-it is.

-possible, but i installed em right. i verified, during instalation, and just rechecked.

3. One of the longer timing chain cover (or water pump) cover bolts is in the wrong hole and rubbing against the timing chain.
-like most jobs that involve different length bolts, i make a cardborad template and draw the part, and then jam the bolts in the picture.

4. Your chain tensioner is not working properly (i.e. you left tape on it when reinstalling the chain or something is fouling up the oil passage.)
-i think this is the problem. when i had the cover and tensioner off, i cleaned out the oil hole. i squished the new tensioner in and out to see if it wasnt working. it was, seemed ok. i installed the new tensioner. i was thinking about using the old one, but the chain had it all torn up.

fawk.

plastic guides.

i get the 710 joke.
blonde walks in to a parts house says she needs the 710. "what?" they say. you know the round thing in the middle of the engine. they all walk out to the car and she points to the oil cap that reads 710 upside down.

the tensioner is new. but it must be junk.

its not like the chain is loose, or anything. i disconnected the coil wire, and had the wifey crank it. the chain wasnt slopping around or any thing.

do you know where i can buy a 'Easy Button' for this model of truck, or perhaps if anyone has a majic wand they could loan me.

i, know, i know. :D cruiser88 is gonna hook you up, thats pretty damn cool of him.
it came of either a 1980, or 1982 truck. as i got my 1980 with lots of spare parts, and some were from a '82.

eeewwww Can you feel/see the chain flop around on the pass side, where the tensioner is? It sould be spring loaded when the truck is not running....

Well, something's wrong and if you can't see it from the top.... then you're going to have to open it up agian.... The good news is it'll go a lot faster now, cause you just had a practice run. Does the chain look beat up at all?

Well I did just about give away a steering box to Full_M3tal..... Something good was bound to happen to me.... Don't you watch My Name is Earl???? Karma man!

it was snug there, but it just looked like there was more contact on the drivers side than the passengers side.

i did get some long opposite opening pliers down there, and i pused the tensioner in and out. it felt ok.

but i will probly just have to do this all over again, so i can install a OEM tensioner on it. like i should have done in the first place i guess.

and yes, Karma is your friend, as long as you keep it that way. :D

Ya, I'd have a close look at the tensioner. Get an OEM one, it's not that expensive and good piece of mind.

Did you consider upgrading the guides to metal ones? I don't think that's you problem here, but I was just wondering.

What year truck is this on? You have too many in your sig. ;) I'm just thinking that *maybe* you have a timing set for a different series 22R. The older pre-85 engines had a taller deck height to the block, and if you installed a timing set for this engine on a later engine, the chain would be too long. It might not be apparent when you install it. Just a thought...
