well thanks for your help guys, it was infact a idler, just not the one i thot.by removing the p/s belt, running the engine, then the a/c belt, and running the engine, I discovered the A/C idler pulley was makin all the noise, so i removed it, and the belt!
woo hoo!

KLF, this was on my 86 4Runner.

I was thinking about going to steel guides, but concluded it was a waste, since when the chain has to be replaced next time, the plastic guides i wouldnt use would be $$$ wasted.

Well, the belt was always a little loose. and i thot it would be a good idea to get it taght after the service.

the belt is extremly difficult to tighten. if you have ever donre it, you would know. and since there is maybe 3 inches at best between each pulley, it is hard to feel for the right tension.

it is possible i over tightened it. however, when i took it off, the bearing felt really chunky. and since it never made the noise before, was probly cause it was loose.

you know whats funny, after i started it up after the service, that was the first thing i thot. but when i turned the ac on, and it didnt get any louder, i didnt think that where it was coming from.

KLF is a smart guy, I use metal guides, and it is a BIG piece of mind thing. The timing chain can last longer that a plastic guide might be able to. Food for thought, now that you are all done...LOL
I may have like 3 brand new OEM style cam gears kicking around. (I installed an adjustable cam gear when I replaced my t-chain)
