Is your uncle back up and rolling again? Any other damage or what was the final diagnosis?

Hey guys, question on this stuff, my 98 had a timing belt changed at 45,000 miles back in sept 2010 without the waterpump by the Lexus dealer in Naples per the dealer history. I currently have about 67,000 miles. Should I immediately replace the water pump (and other stuff) due to the age or am I OK to wait till September 2016 and do it all then.

If you can, look at the belt and check its condition. If it looks good, you probably can wait. Is there a lifespan on the belt? Or how did you come up with 6 years?

I believe it is actually a 7year/90,000mi interval but most just go by mileage.

more likely, you will know the water pump is getting old by noticing seepage, not that big a deal. Not too likely it'll just stop pushing water suddenly one day. I would not worry about holding off till september.

Not yet, the mechanic isn't able to get into it until probably Tuesday.

Question:

Can anyone tell me definitively what a "90k Service" includes?

According to the vehicles service history on Toyota.com, the Lexus dealer performed this:

90000 MILE SERVICE NON WARRANTY-NON OEM ~|~CUSTOMER REQUESTS 90000 MILE SERVICE ~|~SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE DUE TO TIME OR MILEAGE ~|~90000 MILE SERVICE PERFORMED

...and the parts they used included these:

BELT, TIMIMG 1356809070 1
GASKET 9043012031 1
FILTER, OIL 90915YZZD3 1
BRAKE FLUID 004751BF03 2
ELEMENT SUB-ASSY, AI 1780150040 1
SAE 5W30 SYNTH. 5W30 7
SUPER LONG LIFE COOL 00272SLLC2 2

Elsewhere on the net, I find the definition of the 90k service parts list to include this:

90k Parts:
Water Pump w/ Gasket: 16100-59275-83
Inlet Housing O-Rings: 96761-35035, 96761-24019

So did the dealer charge him for a 90k service and then not do it all?

it's buyer beware. Dealers each have their own version of a 90k service. Check your owner's manual.

I don't have a 100, nor an owners manual for one, thats why Im asking. You sound like you have a lot of experience working at dealerships. Its so frustrating that the service departments at dealerships are so inept and people can't trust them to take care of their car when they are willing to pay for whatever they advise.

Im trying to confirm if this is what Toyota says is the 90k service:

90k Parts:
Water Pump w/ Gasket: 16100-59275-83
Inlet Housing O-Rings: 96761-35035, 96761-24019

If it is, and you take your car into a Toyota/Lexus dealer and tell them you want the 90k service, thats what they should give you.

Here is the official factory list from the '04 owner's manual. I didn't list out all the "inspections", because those are just a quick look to make sure the part is still there (so to speak). Virtually every dealer will do more than this based on their own "profit pack", and virtually everyone who does their own also does more (see list above in the MUD 90K parts list). However, this is what the factory lists:

2004 Land Cruiser Service

Replace the engine oil and filter
Rotate tires
Lubricate driveshaft bushing
Lubricate propeller shaft
Lubricate wheel bearings
Replace timing belt
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine air filter
Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)
17 inspections of components

Additional for special operating conditions (towing)

Replace front and rear differential oil
Replace transfer case oil
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

10-4, thank you

Well, not sure where you're getting that, but here's what's in the manual from "Toyota" (the manufacturer). Keep in mind that many dealers now make more money from service than they do sales. Find a good service rep, and stick with them. I drive almost thirty miles past four closer dealerships for service I trust on items I don't do myself.

BTW, I think you're list is a good one, but keep in mind that on this board we're very much of a "while you're in there" mentality. That plus we're anal about over maintaining our rigs. Most dealers have a different perspective.

Yeah Im trying to figure out what to tell my uncle to do in the future. He's clueless when it comes to cars and doesn't do anything himself, I was shocked when he told me he had been adding Seafoam to it every now and then!

there is a list of maintenance items and miles on one of the Toyota websites.

re-guderian: That's exactly what I used to make the list for the Land Cruiser. Note that many of the items there don't apply to the L.C. and I edited those out. My list and what you posted are the same thing for the 90K

My experience, like some of the others here, is that different dealers offer a different 90K service, depending on any number of factors, including their profit packs, their workload, the service writer's general experience with LCs, etc.

When I got quotes for my 180K, they swung wildly in cost and scope. The parts list you posted was the base level and two dealers quoted just that. I asked them about adding the WP and all of the optional stuff you listed, and they seemed confused.

The dealer I went with was the one where the service writer was very familiar with the LC and suggested adding the WP, serp belt, crank seal, cam shaft seal, etc right off the bat. I had done my research here so I knew that he wasn't BS'ing me. They ended up replacing almost all of that stuff for parts cost only since they were already in there. It's also a dealer in an upscale suburb of the Bay Area and I figured correctly that they had worked on quite a few of these mall crawlers over the years...

So the short story is that your uncle didn't necessarily get ripped off - he just got a dealer that was either unconcerned about being thorough, inexperienced with the LC/LX, or looking for more work down the road. Or maybe just gun-shy about adding extra cost.

alot of times if you just walk in and get a 90k service they will just inspect the waterpump and if its not weeping or leaking they wont necessarily recommend changing it, and most waterpumps are fine at 90k. The thing is they don't always make it to 180k leak free for the next timing belt and even if they do some may not do that belt change on time. If it starts leaking inbetween they will recommend doing it them which is double labor = good for dealer. if it fails well then you are looking at more complications, again, good for dealer.

What is the worst is for the minority of people who have a failure in the waterpump bearings, instead of just a weeping pump, because once the waterpump seizes you loose the belt plus other stuff. its simple, always replace the waterpump with the belt every 90k, and insist on it even if they think yours is fine. the leak is nothing to worry about, but the pump seizing is a common occurance on older water pumps.. i repeat its not rare its more common than you think and any dealer that is not giving you more info knows it and just isnt telling you.

Good to know. I called the mechanic this morning and made sure he was replacing everything from the TB on out including the pulleys, pump and tensioner and he said he was and always does. Part are in and he hopes to have it done by tomorrow morning.
