Cam-- we should definitely take Andy up on a DV offer. Seeing DV the way the NorCal group does it (and I have been on a number of the DV trips) is unparalleled. While not "hardcore" like the Rubicon, DV is beyond a doubt my favorite trip that we take on a yearly basis with Tom, Andy, and Spressomon. They all know it very well and are phenomenal guides for seeing how big and diverse DV really is away from the tourist traps.

DV is epic when you can spend 10 days in a million + acre playground ....

10 days...

I might need to find that magazine gig Todd mentioned!

We get back on I-40, head to Williams, AZ and turn north toward the Grand Canyon. The sun sets on the way up, and we arrive after dark.

The night before, I reserved the last motel room at one of the "Lodges". Think concrete block project buildings (but actually not that bad.) We park outside the door and cook dinner on the tailgate under the stars.

Day Twelve - Wednesday 6/26

I really wanted to see the Grand Canyon at either sunset or sunrise. We missed the sunset window, so we got up about 4:00 a.m., made some coffee and head to the rim. We almost hit a moose on the way out of the parking lot. Sorry we didn't get a pic of Marty for ya, Thomas :flipoff2:

We weren't really sure where we were or where the best spot would be so we just drove as far as we could until it looked like we were about out of time.

We are now officially scenery-fatigued. Not much can impress us at this point in the trip. We just want to get home, but still have over 1400 miles to go. By 7:15 we cry "uncle" and head back to the "lodge" to shower and pack up.

Back at the lodge, we see a rabbit and Andrew thinks he can catch it. We chase it over to some brush where he loses it. I walk around and flush it out where he stalks it some more. We head back to the room where the rabbit is waiting for us in the bushes right outside our door. Andrew keeps trying (unsuccessfully) to catch it while we get ready.

Earlier in the trip, I thought Flagstaff was one of the most beautiful places I'd seen and even texted Stephanie telling her to start looking for jobs here, that we aren't coming back home. This time, coming back through Flagstaff barely elicited a response. Our senses have definitely been overloaded.

Sensory overload or not, we are determined to see this meteor crater that we missed out earlier.

By now it is HOT out!!!

We pull over to get gas somewhere before we get to Albuquerque. Summoning the ghosts of Bomar's past, the truck doesn't start. It did start, but only ran for a few seconds. We start it again, only runs 1/2 second. We try again and it won't even catch.

I pop the hood and try and figure out what is going on. I pull the air plenum so I can see the injectors while my dad tries to start it. They shoot for a second and then go dry. I have a clear fuel filter in the engine bay. It normally is half-full even when the truck is off, but now it is bone dry. Again, I have dad start the truck while I watch. There is a little sputter of fuel, but that is it.

My guess is that my fuel pump died. I got lazy on the TBI install and put it on the fender in the engine bay, instead of down low close to the tank. I figured that maybe I've been putting too much stress on it and I've killed it. I can hear it turn on, but there's no fuel coming out.

We start unpacking the truck in the heat so I can get to my tools and my spare fuel pump. I get all the tools out and dig out the (used) spare pump.

Not wanting to have to switch the pump out, we try once more. I have my dad turn the key to "ON" to cycle the pump while I watch. The pump runs for two seconds and spits out a little more fuel. We repeat and it spits out a little more. We keep doing this until the fuel filter is full and then try to start it.

It ROARS to life! He keeps the accelerator pegged for a bit to keep it running. We say "what the hell" and throw the tools and spare pump back in the truck and take off.

Pulling on the interstate, it hesitates and bogs down a little but then seems to run normally. We cross our fingers and say a few prayers and keep moving.

The original plan was to do Georg's run. His started a day later than the Wagon Run and would have put us driving through ABQ mid-day Monday, where I hoped to have cruiserdan bless my truck for the journey. As it was, we passed through on Sunday, and not wanting to risk angering cdan on his day off (and risk him cursing the truck) I didn't try to contact him.

Now once again we are driving right past American Toyota, but it is after quitting time.

My only hope is that he has personally touched enough of the parts on the truck that we are covered.
