Thoughts on front locker for 100 series land cruiser? (1 Viewer)

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. But this guys opinion is that it will bout stress elsewhere. It seems better to break a cv than a diff in the middle of nowhere.
You’re not going to break a CV unless you’re going absolutely nuts on it. I broke my 2 pinion front and went to a Harrop locked. Granted I don’t have a locked rear, I feel like it really helps off-road. Now I just have one more step before triple locked. I’m a big proponent of the locked front. I think you should do it if the extra $500 or so isn’t prohibitive.

Extra $500?! An Eaton unit is like $1400 I thought. Thanks for the input!

Yeah my Eaton carrier was $1300 from East Coast Gear Supply (highly recommend them for a source, they helped me troubleshoot a lot with my first install).

Not sure what a stock 2 pinion carrier costs but I can’t imagine it being too cheap. Do you know offhand?

Not sure. After disassembly I was told all I needed was a new ring and pinion and the install kit.

Ah ok so I guess your carrier would be “fine” still. Just keep in mind the spider gears in the 2 pinion carrier can also break (that’s how mine failed) in a myriad of circumstances. People have shredded them pulling out of a snowy driveway and catching traction. The Eaton or even stock Toyota 4-pinion will be more robust for these situations where you aren’t locked. Sounds like you’d be in for another $1400 to upgrade, but you’ll save the install fees should you ever break the stock carrier or desire to lock the front for increased capabilities. It’s not my money but I’d spend it on this upgrade. Lockers before light bars!

Oh dang that is good to know. I’ll probably go for it.

Either way try not to do this.

Since you’re local: If you have the guts to do the install yourself I can lend you some tools. But I will say it’s not an easy task. I had the carrier in and out 10 times before getting the pattern acceptable.

Wow thanks for the offer, that is super cool of you. I’m going to pass though. My brother’s friend does lots of this type of work and is only charging me $300. Thanks a lot though.

When I broke my four-pinion front (IIRC), I pulled the diff and rented a car and drove to ECGS (only about 300 miles away for me at the time)—they return shipped me the diff with a Harrop (now Eaton) locker installed. Installation/setup was really reasonable, so I didn’t even consider doing it myself despite years of doing things Im not qualified to do. I installed it with a Toyota factory switch.

Very pleased—Soooo much stronger than the factory setup (among other reasons it’s set up a lot tighter than the factory diffs—imagine a random consumer buying a new car and having to have the diff fluid changed after 500 miles!)
And it’s been pretty great to have—front tires lift easily.

Im about to do the same; rear is already locked.

I like the idea of using the 80 series locker switch, but then I wont be able to activate the front locker independently. Any thoughts on how important that is?

I did both bc the knob is cool af, but there's also room for a push button for just the front. I don't find myself using just the front very often though.

Any more opinions on this? I shattered the front diff ring gear on my 1999 LC (2 pinion) and have the factory rear locker. I’m on 33s, not regearing for 35s or anything. But I am contemplating a front e-locker.

The guy that’s rebuilding my diff says he wouldn’t put in a front locker, that having the rear is enough, and that while it will strengthen the diff it will put a lot of stress on the vehicle. What do you guys think?
"stress on the vehicle" not even sure what that means. Might as well throw a locker in, "while you're in there."

Yeah, I’m not sure if he just meant the CV axles or the rest of the drivetrain and transfer case?

I installed a front ARB recently, once in a while having the front locked would have been nice and knowing the weak front carrier is an issue makes me feel better about it. I have the factory rear locker and an 80 switch but didn't find a wiring diagram that helped so I used the ARB supplied switch. Figured having them separate may be handy some day. I say go for it, glad I did !

I decided to go for it too. The install kit and the Eaton got delivered to my installer yesterday!

Cool ! You've now joined another club !
