wouldn't buy shocks until you pull what you got and make sure they're toast. be sure not to over tighten the nuts when you put the shocks on...they look way too tight right now. i agree about throwing on cheap shocks and if you need add a leafs until you play with it and decide where you really want to go. also, invest in a couple of cans of pb blaster and start soaking all the bolts/bushings now, especially the spring bushings. it's not uncommon to have to burn those bushings out. if you get new spring pins, remember that while they look the same as fj40, most piggies are just a little bit different;), so look for piggie specific ones.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It is a 1975 hog by the way.

With the radiator arriving (hopefully) Thursday, I will throw the new (to me) front tub in, and get things ready for the radiator. I really don't know what to expect drive-wise since it literally hasn't gone more than 10 feet forward or backward since I towed it home in the trailer. If all goes well...or well enough...I'll probably tackle a full suspension refresh (shocks, leafs, etc) this fall. If not...then I guess it'll be sooner huh? :)

Thanks again guys!

Oh, and nuclear, how'd you determine the nuts were on too tight? What visual cue gave it away? I think I have an idea, but I want to see what you say before I look stupid:)

the way the rubber is all squishing out. shock bolts and suspension pins use lock nuts to keep them from backing off, so you don't need to crank them tight. the actually need to be able to pivot a little bit.

First I'd like to say how much I hate you, jdog  ;) I was eyeballing that rig and wishing it was mine but for space and $$$$. As far as your suspension goes. I would remove those coilover shocks for sure. They might be on there for a reason though. Your springs could be sagging and worn out, though I doubt it. Once they are off you will be able to tell just by looking at the rig. I would be hesitant to replace the stock springs if they are ok because the stock ride 55 is an amazing 4 X 4 and am willing to bet it will exceed your expectations. Maybe just rebush the springs and throw some rancho 9000 shocks on it. That is probably the best you can do for riding comfort on a limited budget.

Thanks nuclear. And I agree rsb...I'd hate me too:)

Considering the amount of 'unknown' issues that weren't clear when I bought it, if I had it to do over again I would...but probably offered a little less considering how much more really needed to be done. Then again, I have really high standards, so 'good enough' for me isn't really a good gauge.

I actually have a lot of photos of the work I've done and am in process of, but not a ton of time to post them. When I have my moments I'm in the garage cleaning, grinding, welding, or removing something on the rig. I really have been bad about taking time to post stuff, so I apologize. I've just can't help but keep pushing when I have the time to get more done. I'm sure it will never end, but the wife will be much happier when I can actually drive the thing:) After that, I can get back to more 'fun' projects on the rig and take a little more time to post photos and such.

Thanks again for all the input and feedback guys. It is MOST appreciated!

 You'll have to buy a star if you want to post alot of pictures.

$ 20.00 is all. Woody just demolished a bunch of his junk so I am sure he needs the support.

i can't figure out why you would use coil overs with leafs. except that somebody didn't use the right leafs in the first place. or coil overs for that matter.
looks like a poor attempt at some sort of dual rate spring idea.
