my wife wants a car.
she will end up getting one here pretty soon.
She is done with SUVs
So i will most likely get the LC full time.
commute is about 60 miles r/t
thinking of purchasing a newer used vehicle for the commute, but still need a V8.

What do you guys think of the GX 470, dont want to drop down to a 4runner in terms of fit and finish.

Or should i keep the hundred, and eke deal with gas prices.

the GX is not much better on gas. So if you buy a new car for gas mileage, that is only slightly better, it is going to be a looooong time before you see any ROI.

GX is going to drive a lot better given its smaller size and lighter weight, but you have a known quantity. There's hardly any savings via efficiency between the two.

Quick calculation:
60 miles per day x 250 working days = 15,000 miles
LC 100 @ 14 miles per gallon (assuming mix of highway and city for commute) gets 1071 gallons per year
GX 470 @ 16.7 miles per gallon (pretty stable for me) gets 898 gallons per year
difference: 173 gallons x $4 = $692 savings per year with GX.
I have both - GX is a bit more enjoyable for commute, but I would not trade 100 for GX.

Thats IF you get 16.7mpg. Im only getting 10-11mpg city, no highways for me. I guess the 16.7mpg youre getting is mixed, highway and city....right?

Mostly highway, some city. I refer to GX 470 as getting 16.7 mpg.
Landcruiser gets about 12-13 mpg in the city with heavier tires (Michelin LTX AT/2).
10-11mpg for GX 470 sounds too low to me. Do you have a lot of mods? Heavy cargo?
I pulled third row seats out. And... just for kicks moved both crossbars all the way to the back. The crossbar move got me extra 0.1 mpg

60 miles is a long commute. However, think about what you'd loose financially selling the LC. Also think about taxes you'll have to pay on the GX. Combined it's probably 2-3k.

With a 60 mile commute, you won't be saving much in a GX, as RCsGX said perhaps $600-$700 a year. It only gets about 2 mpg better than the LC. If you went with a 6 cyl 4Runner with regular gas you'd save just over $1300 a year, not too bad. Get yourself a 2010 4runner and you're looking at over $1600 per year savings. The 2010 is 19 mpg combined.

I hear you though, who wants to drive a beater to work, what's the point of having a nice car at home if you're never in it. At least in a GX you will eventually (3-4 years) save some money. Plus you won't have the sting every time you go to the gas pump. Even less so with a 4Runner.

Good answers here. You'll get 20mpg highway in the GX. Compare that to what you're getting in the LC and do all the math. If it's a wash or even a slight neg to the LC 'd still keep that thing - they're the best SUV out there. The GX is also good, but doesn't really compare to a LC, IMO.

The GX is an LC.

Look at the Toyota lineup in the rest of the world, they have 2 Land Cruisers, the Land Cruiser V8 Wagon and the Land Cruiser Prado: (Here's a few).

Actually if you go to the Global Toyota website it's called a Land Cruiser there as well. I think the US is one of the only places it's not badged an LC.

But if you go to the heritage Land cruiser site it's says the Prado is for light duty. Let that deflate your ego for a second....

I only have a 6-9 mile commute through traffic, so I can't really relate. But I'm enjoying my 100 a lot more now that I only use it for off roading, dates/shopping with the fiancé and when the weather sucks. I was riding a Honda ruckus to work (super dorky but 125mpg) and just switched to a Honda cbr250r (slightly less dorky and 77mpg). They're easier to find parking for too.

If I can ride a scooter to work you can drive a Prius C. THen you'll feel good about driving the 100 and feel good about getting 54mpg on your commute.

As my dad once told me, "what do I need a fancy car for? I still have to drive the same boring roads to work every day."

It's not about Ego's, look at my Avatar, I drive a 100 series. However, I happen to really like the GX as well. Actually I'm very impressed with much of the Toyota/Lexus lineup.

I'm just pointing out some facts that many Americans do not know. Most Americans do not know that the Lexus GX is a Land Cruiser Prado throughout the rest of the world.

I've lived in Australia (the land of Land Cruisers) and have seen what the LC Prado can do. Snorkeled, slidered, bumpered, lifted and that thing is a badass!! Is it a 70 series....no, but it can handle it's sh*t.

I have a 2003 Lexus GX470 ready for service off road. Happy to follow an equally equipped 100.

Sounds fun to me :)

The ego line was a joke. It's just silly that the Land Cruiser heritage site listed each one as heavy duty, light duty or station wagon. Seems very arbitrary. They're all pretty heavy duty.

I love the GX470. The design has aged really well. The flip down tailgate and better aftermarket support in the US is the only reason I got the 100 over the 120.

I just sold a 2004 100 series and got an 08 4runner Limited V8 4WD. I'm very happy and don't regret it a bit. I was in the same situation. Wife wanted car, and I got the truck, but my commute is 55-miles a day, plus other business travel putting me at 25k+ a year. Going from 14-16 MPG to 17-20 MPG makes a big difference.
