I have looked at a 2000 LC with 126k miles that body and interior look great. Unfortunately I haven't test driving it but the owner tells me it has transmission problems and won't go over 40mph.

From the research I've done it appears that in 2000 toyota changed suppliers and had some transmission failures .

With that said how much would a transmission repair would cost or is it better to get one from the junkyard and swap it.

He is asking 3k and not sure if it's worth the work or not.

Is there a known issue out there that might not be a transmission that could cause this?

$3k is a bargain if everything else is good. You should be able to get a replacement tranny put in for $3-4k, and have a truck worth at least $9k...

You should drive and see. Check how it shifts through gears. May be the owner has the 4WD shifter in Lo? Simply shift it to Hi and drive home at 75 MPH!

I got a 2000 and still the factory transmission, no problem what so ever.

I almost hate to say this for fear of jinxing myself, but my 2000 has 317k on the factory transmission and drives perfectly.

There are/were some known issues with year model 2000 transmissions...but not nearly as frequent as is sometimes expressed.

A 2000 with low miles and in otherwise pretty good shape is a heck of a bargain at 3K.

Personally, I'd purchase a low mileage used transmission (not from a 2000) and install it. They can be had for something around 1K.

The A343F transmission is pretty hardy. With any reasonable maintenance/service it is not uncommon for them to go 300K+ miles.

It is possible too that the current transmission only requires a small repair. Who knows. I would drive it first. If all else sounds good....plan on replacing the trans (rebuilt or low mileage used) and you should have a great vehicle to drive or flip.

The alleged problem was never 2000 model year, it was 2000 calendar year and into 2001 calendar year. But the data wasn't really very compelling. It's a fine example of an internet "problem", that gets blown way out of proportion, and may not even exist at all.

Thanks for all the replies guys .I will definitely test drive it.

Keep your fingers crossed that it's on 4L and it's as easy as that .

It would blow my mind if that thing was in 4 low. But its possible I guess. maybe the car was guy moved it to clean around the area or a kid was playing with it and didn't put it back. Any interior photos from the ad? maybe you can see it from there.

I'm hopeful as he sent me a pic of it with it in 4l!

And the shift knob is upside down so he might think it's in H as the H is the same upside down and down side up .

What you guys think?

It's in 4 low for sure.

But a simple answer to the issue would be to ask the owner if the transmission shifts through the gears and then tops out at 40 mph...or if there is NO shifting of the gears.

IF you test drive it and it turns out that all that was needed was to move the T-case into high range, please be HONEST and tell the guy.

Don't take advantage of the situation.

Dude, do the right thing and tell the owner, the guy paid good money for a Land Cruiser and expected it to last. If it works, then say, here how about $4k-5k for it.
