Hate to bring up a "while you're in there" but since you'll have the starter out for the PHH, might as well throw new contacts and plunger in... No?

Also, here is what happens when you over torque a breeze clamp... Foot lbs instead of inch lbs, doh! I now know why some favor the stock Toyota clamps. View attachment 1209382

I'm going to roll the dice on the starter. I'll defer to Joey on this one. He's started it and driven it. I haven't. I've also never rebuild a starter...I'm sure it isn't a big deal.

Oh really?!?!?! You are dead to me and on my blacklist.... :flipoff2:

Where have you been?!?!?! Me hating Texas is my "thing"!!! I'm also on record as saying the only good thing in Texas is Austin. Maybe I should amend my statement to "F%$& Texas, except Austin!" :grinpimp:

Alright, here is the tentative plan. You all convinced me that this is the sound and rational move.

March 3rd Morning - Arrive in LA around 9am
March 3rd Daytime - Replace the PHH and Get the actuators working on the locking diffs
March 3rd Evening - Drink a beer or two
March 4th Morning - Leave early heading for Salt Lake City
March 4th Late Afternoon - Arrive at @cruiseroutfit because, well, why not
March 4th Evening - Arrive in Green River, WY at Trail Tailor aka @reevesci
March 5th Morning - Top Secret Cruiser Stuff at Trail Tailor
March 5th Afternoon - Head West on I-80 towards Iowa
March 5th Evening - Stop somewhere
March 6th Morning - Drive until I smell oatmeal, ethanol, wood pulp, corn sweetener, and river.

May arrange a pit stop with @MDarius along the way as well... And anyone else that is on the route from LA > SLC > Omaha > Cedar Rapids

@Qball @Dragos80 @jtwopark and anyone else is welcome to come tinker and drink beer at Joey's.

And if anyone wants some running boards they will be next to Joey's garage. HAHAHAHA

Road trip! Awsum! Well, we're kinda outa the way or would plan on a rendezvous, but can be on standby for support.
I'd put dibs on them there runnin' boards, but gosh darn it, I hate LA traffic more than mud.

Call me if you need a rescue anywhere EAST of the Rockies. It'll give me an excuse to do something fun.

1) Remove the damn bumper stickers (Except the FarmGirl one.)
2) Change the oil.
3) fill the knuckles with grease
4) Check the wheel bearings on all 4.
5) Check fluid levels
6) Check Tires pressures
7) Don't disassemble the screws on the air valve on the intake hose. You know what will happen......
8) Take a clean pair of underwear in case you need them.
9) Check the steering arms on both knuckles.

Pick up some fluids for the road:
Antifreeze (pick a color.....)
brake fluid

Spare belts

Buy a set of Craftsman tools (the kit kind) before you roll, and don't open it until you NEED it. Then return it when you get back to Iowa. That way you have something for an insurance policy.

Speaking of.....Don't forget to pay your insurance agent their take before you go, so you will be covered on the trip. Maybe do AAA Premium as well so if you need a tow.......

When you get back: Monstaliner. It's a WHOLE lot cheaper than paint. It also keeps the sheep's hooves from scratching it. I don't know if they make it in Rainbow.

Cabela's seat covers and a blue foam pad (1" thick egg crate) work GREAT to cover up those crappy seats during the down time. ($25 each for the cover and $10 for the foam pad)

I hope the trip goes well! It would be the trip of a lifetime for you and your son! My son and I awoke our Studebaker from 31 years of slumber and forced it into a 600 mile round trip with only brake work and a rear axle. Yours should be a piece of kelp!

We're taking the Stude on the Hot Rod Power Tour in June (1500 mile trip), but we're doing some work to it first!

Welcome back to HG/PHH/Harness territory!

I laugh every time we go back to Iowa. We can identify the kind of farm we are approaching with our eyes closed. Since I was a farmer, I can appreciate it, and it really doesn't smell that bad.....to me........, but I also had my sinuses burned out from the ammonia in our chicken operation.

I was going to comment on this, but I think your sense of direction might be a little "off".

Either that, or your understanding of "fording" a Series 80 is just a little... ahem... "optimistic".

Makes me think of this:

If you are taking out the EGR / making it non-stock now, consider a PHH bypass with a longer section of hose from the block to the heater valve and just break off the PHH metal pipe attachment at the back of the engine. You can reach the PHH from the DS wheel well if you take off the brake line bracket and trans dip stick and leave the starter in place.

Where are you located?

The maintenance will all be squared away. Fluids checked. Prior to leaving LA.

I have the Cabela's seat covers in my other 80. Going to take them with me since Frank is making me new covers.

I don't think I'm going to do Monstaliner. I just don't want that "finish". I originally thought that is what I would do but don't think I will head that direction. We'll see when I see it and see how bad it is.

My son and I have been on some pretty epic road trips in my other 80. Yukon. Baja. But I'll be rolling solo this time around. We are going to make a two week fishing/expedition trip later this year.

Not going to do the EGR delete prior to the trip. That will get done. Too much to do prior to a 1800 mile road trip.

Ordering the PHH kit from AJIK today. @NLXTACY should I order the regular kit or the bypass kit?

Maybe I'll come meet you at Curt's @cruiseroutfit. I need some stuff anyways.

1 vote for the bypass kit.

I'm hoping I can make it to Kurt's in time. @Dragos80 has me concerned that traffic will suck. Rethinking my timeline and dates today.

Unfortunately I likely won't be around on 3/4, there is a local Toyota club trip that weekend in NE Utah. Not 100% sure quite yet. Bryce, Chris and Ryan will be around all day Friday (except lunch). We're not much to look at but we have parts ;)

It's all squishy. Times, I mean. Speed limit in Southern Utah is posted at 80 MPH. Even when it's 70 it's 80. Even when it's 65, it's 80. It's a shame to pass through there without engaging the lockers though. For me, it's a LOT longer than 10 hours to get to LA. Too many side roads.

Not sure of the dates yet now. I will update when I figure it out. I'm trying to figure out everything with work today.

Regular. It's been changed before so some of the difficulty has been removed since it has worm clamps on it.

Roger that.
