This is a simple way to place a decent 6.5" round speaker under the front dash area of an FJ55. The parts needed for the install are going to be as follows:

1. Two roof vent stack flash panels part number 11940 (LOWES)
2. Box opener
3. 3/8" self tap metal screws (8 total needed)
4. your 6.5" speaker with face plate

I went to Lowe's today to get these and all they had were galvanized steel flashing - bummer! The guy said the insurance companies don't like the plastic ones anymore. So I left. I looked up the p/n above and another store nearby has 9 of them. What the heck...

My journey continues!

This will bring me one step closer to being ready for radio install, and pulling the tricky center panel.

I really like this idea. Even though I'm not useing kick panels, this seems so much better than speakers in the doors. I always put speakers in my VW doors, in time they always got funky, loose, etc., just not a good place for stuff.

They still have them in one of the hardware stores I visit in WA. You might try doing a parts search with that part number listed.

There were some metal ones too, not the cheap thin ones but some sturdy ones. I won't be in the area for a while but next time I am I will check and see if they still have them in stock for the other part number as well as take some other photo's.

Turns out Lowes does have these, but in Plumbing, not Roofing, and they are under Item # 200311.

The 11940 is the Model # from the manufacturer - Oatey.

It looks like MiniPigg moved his hood release when he did this. I am opting to leave my hood release in the stock location, given the 3 fasteners already in place. However, when I cut the roof vent panels to fit, I have no room for the downward throw of the hood release - I will have to clearance for that:
