Nope, haven't even had a chance to trouble shoot it. I am going to get a new mounting bracket like Adam's and try again.

I might redo mine too. Forgot to paint it so it's starting to rust where i cut it. The sawzall might make it easier. I had to grind the last one. Getting longer mounting bolts would help too.

I think you need the spring to get your length right. I'd heard that the antennas are designed to work with the spring length wise.

I've only come across one person who I have wheeled with who has had HAM. Seems CB is popular among LC owners...

Really not putting in that much effort. I installed it in like 10 minutes, for some reason it didn't transmit on the trail and I haven't given it the time of day since then. I have put more time into answering questions of did I get it to work than actually messing with any of it. The radio was free to me so why not use it. If you want to buy me a ham radio and get me a license I will be more than happy to install it in my truck for you :) I didn't even go as far as to buy parts. It is held in place quite securely with industrial velcro and the antenna is bolted straight to part of the frame under the bumper, SUPER CHEAP!

Adam is the one spending his nights grinding away at home depot brackets. I will just use his 1.0 bracket as soon as he finished 2.0. That way I am not putting too much effort into a CB

Yeah. SanDiegoCruiser (Craig) checked it all out and everything looked good. Crystal clear reception but very weak transmit. Might have been antenna length. I didn't have a spring mount on. We tuned it up with a SWR meter. I'm not an expert in any of this so I just did what Craig told me to.

Well now you know me so add 2. Mobile and hh. We're gonna run 2 meter on the death valley trip.

FYI those baofeng hh 2 meter hams are getting good user feedback. $65

New spare 255/85R16. Mod for more clearance coming soon.

Cool build man! I like the CB mounted there, did you ever get it working? Maybe it was a ground issue. I was thinking about doing what you did, or making a bracket that will stick out below the tail light. It just looks right having a big whip antenna, even though the through-glass ones work pretty well.

The reindexed bars really perked that thing up, looks killer.

updates

It has been forever since I have updated my build. Not a ton to add. I have used the truck more than I have been adding mods. I have added a few minor things to the truck. First here are a few shots out in the wild having fun with the truck.

Sierras

Anza Borrego

Rowher trail for some local day fun

Mojave Road

Death Valley

Got some pretty minor carnage in Death Valley. Almost needed sliders. This was going up Mengel Pass (from stripped butte side)

I also removed the mud flaps after that trip

Here is clearance with the new spare. I have been meaning to raise the spare up a bit with spacers but haven't gotten to it even though its a dead simple mod.

One of the more useful things I have added to my truck is a bad elf bluetooth GPS. It allows up to 5 devices to connect to it at a time. I pair it with Motion X GPS HD app on the iPhone and iPad for a great nav solution. Right now it just sits in the car wherever. I am working on a mount that will put it up near the handle on the drivers side so I can see it while driving.

I turned the wheels around to get rid of the white letters. The white letters got thrashed on mojave road. looked terrible.

Finally got the CB working and a new antenna mount on the hood channel.

Used the bolt right in the hood channel to mount the bracket

Ran the cable through the drivers side firewall.

I got all this done just in time to not use it anymore because I got my HAM license and a HAM radio. More on that in a bit.

I also started exploring other options for roof top lodging.

I had to replace my rear bumper. It took a pretty good hit on Gold Mountain in Big Bear and was hanging on by 1-2 tabs. I could hardly stand on it. A friend had replaced his rear with a slee and still had his rubbermaid bumper sitting in the back yard. Its not the prettiest but at least its solid. I kind of like the look sans any bumper at all. Wife didn't agree.

With a growing family I started looking into alternative rooftop lodging solutions..........

I kid, but seriously a RTT would be nice.

HAM Radio Install

Ok, on to the more fun stuff. I have been trying to find the time to get my HAM license for a while now and finally got it. I had an Alpine touch screen for a stereo but it was kind of useless so I opted to replace it with a single DIN headunit and mount the HAM radio underneath. The install was super easy. I used the mounting brackets from the double DIN touch screen, mounted the single DIN headunit in exisiting holes on the top and then only had to drill two holes for the back screws of the HAM radio. It was almost as if the bracket was made for two single DIN units. I lucked out. Minimal modifications are always good. I used plastic spacers to center the HAM radio as it was narrower than the stereo.

Fits perfect. I was going to make a custom faceplate to close the gaps but decided to leave it open because a) its really not noticeable or bothersome and b) it lets out a good deal of heat from the HAM radio.

I also instaleld a fuse block in the center console to run all the accessories off of. It is wired to the main battery. No dual battery yet but I set it up so it will be a simple switch to a 2nd battery later.

Ham Speaker

With the HAM in the dash the sound was not going to be great so I decided to run an external speaker and mount it up where the garage remote would go. This mod required a good but of cutting and trimming of the swing down panel. Eventually it fit like a glove. I plan on covering it with speaker cloth at some point to finish it off cleanly.

I cut the opening in the panel a bit larger later on so that the entire speaker is clear of plastic. It sounds incredible. It is like someone is sitting right next to me.

Dynamat

I had some really bad music induced door vibrations. A good friend of mine had the hookup at dynamat and gave me some of his leftovers. I had just enough for both front doors, inner and outer surfaces. Sounds awesome.

Once it was installed this happened.

Sliders

After years of running with no sliders with only 1-2 close calls I finally decided to get some. But I decided I wanted to make my own. I had drawn up a bunch of interesting designs in CAD trying to come up with something new and exciting but in the end I settled on a simple step slider, almost exactly like the slee one except probably not as nice and not as well thought out. I have three reasons for a slider.

1) A place to jack the truck up if I blow a tire on the trail. With the lift and larger tires and no bumpers I was hard pressed for a place for a high lift to go.

2) Family friendly step for the kids (There are two now!)

3) insurance for my rocker panels. This is the lowest on my list because 95% of the time I am not doing stuff that I even remotely need a slider for. It's that other 5% that bothers me at night.

This is one of many iterations and random designs looking for a new profile

In the end I just went to the shop and started cutting metal and building as I went.

Here are some photos from last night. Got a good amount done in 6 hours.

Still have to work out the frame supports and connections. When I took a quick look at Klaus' sliders it seemed pretty straight forward. In reality the frame angles and fit was too critical and tight to do what I had intended to do. So I have to go back to the drawing board. I have a solution just need another night in the shop. Pretty excited about how they are coming along. I am only in it for about $200 right now. Can't beat that.
