Just read the whole thread. Awesome truck. I am very interested in your performance observations with the 3FE/H150F combo. I have an H150F swap on a pallet in the shop for my 1991 FJ80 that I haven’t touched yet, but I also just bought a crusty 1HD-T 5 speed 80 that I’m thinking of using as a donor instead, and selling the 3FE trans swap.

Looks like you were doing 14-15mpg on highways stretches (I’m guessing at 75mph). How’s your overall economy? Any tanks at lower highway speeds?

Any other general comments on performance?

Cheers

To put a little context to it, I have 2 other similar setups in my 60 and 55.
60 has a 85% built (just lacking the cam) Mosley Motor with Sniper and the 55 has a 100% built Mosley Motor with Sniper.

The Desmog 3FE with the Mosley head is pretty much as good as my FJ60 as far as power. It’s not quite cop motor status but the 3FE is so damn smooth and with the 9:1 head it pulls hard up to redline in 3rd.

Mind you I’m being weight conscious with this truck. No bumpers. 33” tires. No heavy roof rack. Because of that it feels incredibly peppy and nimble.

I was very (very) impressed with it in the hills and in the corners on the 2 lane. The H150 is in a total different universe than the H55 with the close gearing. 1st gear is usable and there are no major bogs between shifts.

Wouid I go there if I had a 1HZ-TD sitting there waiting for the swap? Maybe. That’s also coming from a diesel hater so take that with a grain of salt.

I’m impressed. It’s a great setup. 75-80 knocked the fuel economy to 12-13 but 2 lane 60-70 it was sipping at 15

Awesome. Do you find you have to downshift much for hills on the highway? And with the 9:1 compression do you still run it on regular?

The HDJ81 is being shipped right now so I haven’t driven a diesel yet. I do like the 3FE though, I just feel like it’s the A440F/gearing that let it down.

That transmission sucks about 50% of the meager 150 Hp out so yes. It’s a killer.

At the risk of momentary thread drift (my apologies), can or does the 3FE/H150F combo retain full-time AWD?

Mine does not but some of the transfer cases behind the H150 do. I don’t know the designation of my Tcase though.

It has a direct shift pattern.

Yup, the HF2A and HF2AV could be had behind the H150F/H151F

Is my part time case an HF2A?

I believe yours would be an HF1A, being part time. HF2A full-time with open centre diff, HF2AV full time with viscous coupler centre diff.

The worst road in my area is actually a paved road that is completely hammered with potholes and wash out with whole sections reverted back to gravel. I made two quick passes down it for a total of about 8 miles of heavy chop and the shocks heated up to about 85*. That’s a great sign. The ride feels great. Zero body roll.

Then we went and got pizza.

When I got back. This bling had arrived ..... total and complete overkill but hey, only the best for the OddBall80....plus Jason would have said I was a wimp for backing down at that point

Run those baby’s on some of those roads in Jackson (Capital St?) without any swerving and report back🤣

Growing up we had what we called a "cruiser cricket" in our 60 that we just learned to live with on long road trips

I took it to Lous and was sad they fixed old canton and north state.
