Drove around SE Kansas with the family and ended up in Picher, OK. The town is officially abandoned because of large amounts of water and soil contamination from the lead and zinc mining operations. More than 50% of the lead and zinc used during WWI came from this area. At one time there was over 14,000 miners working here. You can see the mountains of mining waste piled up in the background. It was a sight to behold.
