Well, good news / bad news kinda day for me.

Bad news first: I kinda suck at sporting clays, or at least the last 2 times I've gone. Johnny beat me unmercifully on the Drake's Landing course today. Like I told him, I guess this makes me the reloader in the coming zombie apocalypse, right? :bang:

I did redeem myself a bit in the pistol pit. Not to blame the tools, but I don't think my home defense Mossberg 500 is a great set-up for clays. The stock rides kinda high on the recoil-reducing stock I'm running, so it's hard to get a good sight down the beads, even with a good cheek weld. Oh well, practice and either some mods, or a different shotgun altogether, should help. Either way, it's always fun to get out and shoot!

Anyway, on to the good news, specifically for anybody unfortunate enough to live in Durham County, at least when it comes to gun laws. Some of you may know already, but the 1935 law allowing Durham County to require registration of hand guns has been repealed! The law repealing it was ratified on 6/19. So, Durham is no longer the only remaining county in North Carolina that still requires hand gun registration. Some of you may have already chosen to ignore that law anyway, and that's your choice, but either way.....now it's a non-factor.

I think putting the stock stock on your 500 would make a big difference :D

Had a blast!! The G17 shoots flipping great :bounce:

I LOVE Drake Landing. When did you guys go? Original course or new course?

We went yesterday. Seemed like pretty much the same course I stunk at last time, which was a few months ago. It is a really nice place though. I just wish it were closer!

Amen to that. If Drake's Landing were up near Durham, I'd be there every day after work.

You are correct about the Moss 500 not being the proper gun for the task. A home defense or a field gun makes shooting any type of clays much harder. I was into shooting trap for several years before the economy fell out and the price of shells went up, at the same time no less.

I shoot a Remington 1100 competition with fully adjustable stock, walnut stock and foregrip. It comes in synthetic now too. Purists at my club busted my chops about how it is a gas gun and I need to get a breach load under and over. I always asked if swapping guns would that make me shoot their score of 18-19 and them shoot my score of 25. My best run was 125 straight in wobble trap.

THe main difference is that with a trap gun you keep the clay above the barrel in the sights, with a field gun you have to cover up the clay to be successful.

Just got done shooting various guns today as our boss took us for a teambuilding event at the shooting range here in Garner. Hamburgers at Grill 57 and then off to shoot. Was able to shoot a S&W Shield, Colt 1911, Glock 19, Walther PPK, .357 Python, and a H&K MP5. Of course the H&K was badass... But, learned I am left eye dominant and from multiple people said was a natural, so I'm ready to go shooting with you guys. I'm hooked...

I'm left eye dominant also. I still shoot pistol right handed. I just have to hold a little further left. I shoot rifles or shotguns left handed though.

We definitely need to get out and shoot as a group sometime soon!

Erymer is also left eye dominant. He's taken me clay shooting once and it was a blast. Anytime at the gun range is a good time in my books.. :)

Yeah, I guess I'm the same as you Allen. Trigger finger is the right. Holding the MP5 and pulling the trigger with the left finger seemed very awkward, but the sights lined up and managed to keep my bursts centered in the chest. With two remaining rounds in the head ...

What are you going to pick up Brian?

We need another club shooting day.

The mp is sweet. Shot it a couple of years ago. They are only 15k and you need some federal license nonsense for it and the suppressor. ;)

I am also left eye dominant and shoot right handed. We are fortunate that we have a built in range on our property. We have a ravine that we shoot down in to. You can stand on my front porch and shoot the target if you like.

To all who are cross-dominent (L eye, R hand) - take advantage of that - pistol & magazine rifles shot cross-handed helps a ton for alot of situations.

The only time I stick to my left eye dominent is for skeet/trap practice & real feathers.

And don't buy into the stupid "Left Handed" uppers for AR's - I have had thousands of rounds (some even .50 BMG - those give ya a pucker :o ) -flung past my right eye (generally wearing lenses) - but never once had brass fly wild the way a pistol does.

The .50 you sometimes see not just the shell but the brass sliver the extractor took when the bolt came back - that is always cool.

When you say "magazine rifles shot cross-handed helps a ton for alot of situations...", are you saying to shoot right handed (right hand is trigger hand) with a magazine rifle, even if you are left-eye dominant? How would you line up the sights? Do you hold it with the stock against your left shoulder, but use your right hand as the trigger hand? I've never tried it that way. Seems like it would be a little awkward. I just switch to left-handed for rifle / shotgun, but stick with right-handed for pistol.

I really liked the Glock 19, felt good in my hand, shot well with it, rugged for taking on trips like we do... Although, that little Shield has some kick to it also for such a small concealable firearm. If anybody has some suggestions and ability to let me try one out, I'd be up for it.

I'm also interested in the keep the cross dominance statement. Being a future new shooter, I'd like to try out shooting with my left hand (I play drums left handed, but write and throw right handed) as I am probably a little on the ambidextrous side.

I have a Glock 19 you can shoot sometime if you need to. If you can find somebody with a Shield, or a place that'll rent you one, we can go check 'em out side-by-side.

as I was shooting yesterday I found that I may actually be a better shot left handed. to me it seemed that the trigger dynamics fit those fingers better...but it could be my eyes too...
Brian a smaller gun will typically have more kick due to less mass....FWIW I was shooting the SCCYcpx2 and its a decent American gun with an awesome warranty. at 275$ I may buy one for each hand
