Kelly Kettle is a single tasker and a bulky one at that. IMHO it's bulk makes it pretty worthless for situations where I'd just want hot water ie backpacking. So the only time it would be practical would be car camping. For the same volume in my truck I could carry an old Coleman Peak series single burner stove and extra fuel, pots and pans, plus I could boil, fry, simmer, etc.

Grabbed a 426D last week off clist for $15. Barn find. Now to clean it up...

Awesome-$15 is my kind of price. Great stove too. I virtually never pass up a 3 burner for $20 or less.

It doesn't count if you don't post pictures and flame shots in the dark.

Which version of D is it??? Early straight grates, middle round insert grates or late Indented grates? Dates on the tank tabs or bottom of the case?

I was perusing the evil place late one evening and, in a moment of weakness, found myself the winner of a beautiful 502.

It looks like it was only used a few times. The fount is perfect, the only exception being a small crack in the decal. Most of the rust colored stuff on the bowl wipes off with a wet rag. Five minutes of elbow grease should have it minty fresh.

I don't know if this came from the factory like this, but it has a fount from the short-lived 501. I'm guessing it was a transitional piece?

It pumps up nice and spits out the remains of the PO's fuel when you open the valve. I'm pretty sure I'll be making coffee on it in the morning.

After using the 426, I've grown to appreciate the big-body stoves. I have an ugly, but sound 413E that was missing the tank.

A guy over on the Coleman Forum was selling off his beater stove collection for $7.50 each. He had a 413E in his stash that was pretty whooped, but the tank looked usable.

$7.50 later, and I'm the proud new owner of a gold tank.

The inside of the stove is covered in greasy dirty rust. It looks like a good scrubbing will turn it into a user. I would like to address the rusty metal parts though.

I pulled the burners and dropped them into a container of vinegar to eat the rust off (no electolysis tank - yet!)

Does anyone have a good suggestion on how to finish the parts that see direct flame and high heat? Anybody have any experience with the VHT 2000 degree paint? They say you have to follow the proper curing sequence to get the full 2000 degrees out of it.

Cam-I've used the VHT 2000 degree paint and it works very well for burner bowls. After some use, they get a little brown, but it protects from the rust quite well. I painted 2 500A cast iron burners with it and since its black, it looks perfect. I did the 250/400/600 cure in the oven and then ran it full blast for 30 minutes. You don't need the primer or the clear.

You can kind of see it here:

That 413E should have a red tank-since it's a later 413E(you can tell by the grate). Rustoleum Regal Red is a nice match. That's also the original generator, which is a nice vintage touch. Hopefully the needle is intact and you can clean it out.

The needle is there. It pumped up nice and let air out with the valve.
It lost its air-tightness when I broke the ancient seal on the cap. Replacing cap gaskets seem to be a given with these things.

It does have some rust in the tank, so I'll have to deal with that.

When curing paint in the oven...it's better to ask forgiveness than permission, right?

The 502 is breeding...

So, before I won the 501/502 above, I had placed a low offer on a badly beat up 502. After winning the beauty, I kinda wished I hadn't made an offer on the beast. Of course, Murphy's Law being impossible to cheat, my offer was accepted on the ugly 502.

It looks even worse in person than in the horrible eBay pictures. It doesn't work as-is, but it did come with a 1/2 tank of old fuel!

Since I've already got a working model, I'll set it in the stash to later take apart and refresh it with new paint and turd polish.

The day that I won the ugly stove, another 502 I was watching was closing. It was a nice looking piece, but for some reason, it was completely disassembled. They had an assembled pic and it looked perfect, so I don't know why they took it apart.

Since it was apart, I went ahead and did a polish on all the metal parts and waxed the fount.

It turned out looking like new! I can't believe it is almost 50 years old.

Nice! Is the silver support tray painted with that same paint?

The silver support tray is just regular Rustoleum high temp (I think 1200 degres)

Your 502 that you put back together is pretty awesome.

The 500 and 500A are much bigger and much heavier than the 502. They are not any hotter though.

I haven't done a side-by-side, but I remember my 508 putting out as much or more heat that the main burner on a full size stove. The 502s seem to have a smaller burner and not put out quite as much. I rarely have it crunk to full blast, so it probably won't matter.

I'm thinking that I need to take apart and wax/polish my other 502. I think it is in just a hair better shape, but they need to match - for a project that I have in mind.

Two single burners stacked vertically are the same height and depth as a 200/242. I'm thinking of making a travel box to hold two single burner stoves and one single mantle lantern. Or one tall, slender box to hold one stove and one lantern, or even two tall slender ones.

Nice! I'm going to lay low for a while, but that's what I'll be on the lookout for next, maybe an earlier version. I am out of the closet, I am now a single mantle convert.

With that said, I am offering this barely-used May '77 220J [STRIKE]***FREE TO A GOOD HOME***[/STRIKE]. (GONE) It looks like the one time it was used it was to do concrete work in the dark. It has concrete splashed all over. I have not tested it with mantles, but it pumps up nice, holds pressure, and makes gurgling noises when you turn the valve. It does still have some old fuel in it, so it could take a little tinkering to work, but probably needs no new parts.

I got it for free, have not used it, have no plans to use it, so I'm setting it free.

I have a few more in various stages of completeness for the same price if there is interest.

Cam, you are the man. Got my lanterns last week during the IH8MUD maintenance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this treat. You are too generous :D

This 220J is in really good shape. It has some stuff stuck to the side, possibly spackle or cement, but is in great shape other than that.

IMAG0883.jpg

This 220K has one spot of corrosion on the tank but is in better overall condition than the 220J. It also has a little flint lighter inside the glass housing! I've never seen that before. I need to find where I can get a new flint for this thing so it will work once more.

THANKS CAM!!!

Johnny-On that flint lighter, there is usually a spare flint inside the knob. If not, Zippo flints work.

I really like the flint lighters for camping lanterns. It's much more convenient when lighting in a wind.

Glad you enjoyed the IPA, I was all out of ribs and velvet Elvis paintings that I usually use as packing material :grinpimp:. They are one of several new brewers to open up shop in Memphis.

If you can't find the Zippo flints, check a hardware store - they sell replacement flints for the plumbing torch sparkers.

Had I known to look there, I might have removed it!
