Johnny-On that flint lighter, there is usually a spare flint inside the knob. If not, Zippo flints work.

I really like the flint lighters for camping lanterns. It's much more convenient when lighting in a wind.

I've got some zippo lighters! One of them will have to sacrifice its flint for this lantern. Good call Drew!

Glad you enjoyed the IPA, I was all out of ribs and velvet Elvis paintings that I usually use as packing material :grinpimp:. They are one of several new brewers to open up shop in Memphis.

If you can't find the Zippo flints, check a hardware store - they sell replacement flints for the plumbing torch sparkers.

Had I known to look there, I might have removed it!

 I would have loved a velvet Elvis painting, but I enjoyed the beer much more. Thanks again!

So that's 3 502s?

There might be another, even uglier one in the USPS system :grinpimp:

Well, to quote your wife, what are you going to do with all those 502s? LOL :hillbilly:

Coleman Model 445
Peak1 Stove
Apex II 445-900 R1

NIB never fired

I had two of these gave one to my son he has used it a few times.

CUTE!

Yeah cute. I don't know who they thought they were kidding when they called this a light weight stove, it's heavy even by 90's standards. So you have a stove that's a lot more complicated than the 502 and it's successors but to heavy for backpacking. It would probably make a decent car camping stove if you owned a 1970 Honda Civic. :grinpimp:

That's interesting. 550 burner and generator with a remote pressure tank. Unfired is good.

That's pretty nice.

The pressure tank connector is a crap design, way to fragile for camping use. I don't have pictures but the little black plastic thingy on the hose protects a thin brass tube with a spring sticking out the end when the tank is disconnected. If I think of it I'll grab my sons and get some burn pictures.

Side note the table is a 30's vintage card table I rescued. Someone had spray painted something on it . I gave it a light sanding and a few coats of poly. I was going to use it for a camp table but now it looks to good to bang up in the woods.

While I was on my stove-buying bender a while back, I picked up a second 242C. It was missing the bail and a globe, but it looked like my other one (which I've found I like better than the shiny nickle ones). It doesn't hurt that these are cheaper, too.

I'm hoping I can clean it up some without disturbing its character.

I got a replacement globe and a cheap 200 bail to get it going.

A quick test revealed a dry pump and bad cap gasket. A little oil and a borrowed cap, and I was back in business. Now it pumped up, held pressure and let it air out when I open the valve. I put some clean fuel in the fount and shook it up. It poured out crystal-clear.

I was about but to tie on a mantle, but the voices told me to take the burner frame off. It was mostly out of curiosity, but I'm glad I did - the generator needle was messed up and was a twisted mess when I pulled it out. Always listen to the voices!

I pulled the generator from the beater 200 and reinstalled on the 242. I put some new fuel in, pumped it up and did a test light without a mantle. It worked, kinda, but it revealed where all the leaks were.

I put the fire(s) out, tightened up a few things, and tied on a fresh mantle. It didn't want to run at first. It was acting like a bad generator (just like the 200 from whom I borrowed this one.) I didn't give up on her though. I whispered in her vent and tickled her cleaning lever just right until she finally passed the kidney stone or whatever she had and came to life!

Here's the happy couple together:

242s are my absolute favorite. Small and compact, but run well. The brass upper burner once it gets hot makes for a smooth running quiet lantern.

Nice going Cam.

Next up-----a 236 !

I keep my eye out for 236s, but haven't found any I could slide under the radar $$$-wise. I almost bought a birth-year one for my dad yesterday, but somebody else wanted it more than I did.

I *might* have a 242A that I'm hiding in the USPS system ;-)

I can see the differences in the pump on the 'A's, but what are the differences in the 'B' and 'C' models? I guess I need a 'B' before I can move on?

242RP

I've mentioned before how much I like 242s, especially the 242B, and 242C (which are basically the same). They came painted and plated with nickle. Some Canadian ones were even painted "sea foam" green. What makes them great is that they are basically all brass. The upper burner is especially nice being heavy cast brass. They don't leak and they run very quietly. They have other advantages as well. They are very small and compact, fit perfectly inside stoves for transport and most importantly use globes and generators also used by 200As, so that spares will be available basically forever.

Anyway, on another forum I was given a membership to the ICCC (International Coleman Collectors Club) and as their yearly project they had a 242RP (restoration project), where they had arranged with a plater to re-plate all the nickle, a porcelain shop to re-porcelain the vents, and a glass guy to make custom globes for the lantern. I thought I'd show the results. I had basically all the metal but the valve plated, and just re-assembled the lantern a couple of days ago.

This lantern is now basically new. The valve was taken apart and re-done, the valve packing was replaced with new, the pump leather is new as well. I'm waiting for the numbered decal and then I'll update the pictures with better ones.
