Does anyone here ride or own a Surly? I've always wanted to try their Long Haul Trucker touring frame but I haven't had a chance yet...

independent cycles are a spill over from Fat Chance....when the factory was bought they left and started making Independent.....

great bikes, but i put them in with Fat Chance

I dont' think there is anyone at IF still there that originally founded the company when fat left.
I don't keep up with the hand built frame market like I used to.

No matter how well they are made Production Frames/bikes don't fit in this category.

I'd take a Seven and I'd also skip steel and go right to Ti (which I have)

walt works
desalvo
davidson

to name a few. There used to be this guy in denver that built bikes too. Really nice. He has done all the furniture for brothers bbq too. He probably doesn't do bikes anymore and focus' on furniture. I can't remember his name right now.

Steel is a dying breed though. It'd be interesting to see if it makes a comeback. But, like I said before there is no reason to buy steel, go right to Ti.

I love my Yo and I still remember VIVIDLY the first time I rode it and how it handled/rode compared to even nice highend s works stuff etc. It was a dream ride. I still keep a vigilant lookout for a used L or XL Ti FAT. I have a bunch of old FAT stuff too, A brand new Yo Eddy hat with Chris' JH on it dorns the office :D

I don't know what the greatest is, but I've definitely decided that I will be going back to steel on my next hard tail... probably in a 29er.

I love the looks of the '07 Fisher Ferrous 29er.. The new Haro Mary looks like a hell of a bike for the price... of course I am also tempted to save some coin and give a single speed a shot with a Redline Monocog.

Fisher = Giant now...

if you can find an old Fisher you will be much happier...

  Naw, not Giant.. not affiliated at all, Trek/Klein/Bontrager maybe, but the geometry is still different. At 6' 5" the longer frames that Fisher uses fit me better than others. I'm borderline Go-rilla. 21" frame Fishers have a longer top tube that a lot of 23" frames in other manufacturers. And I'm not a guy that will ever drop the coin on a custom job, so it's what works for me.

yep, you are right - GF owned by Trek.....But Giant does make some lowend Trek bikes....very insecstuous (sp)

I've heard good things about the Giant Trance, but never been on a Giant. I've never been on a Trek that I liked, just due to the geometry.. I feel like I'm riding a beach cruiser when on a Trek.

Kona has some of the best geometry out there....very aggressive...

My first mountain bike was a Giant Iguanna......then i was a GT fan...

The problem that I run into is that I live in the MTB black hole of the earth... There are no Kona, Santa Cruz, Turner, Ventana, Salsa, etc.. dealers any where near me. So if I want to actually sit on a bike before buying, it's gonna be a Trek, Fisher, GT, Specialized, Giant, mainstream bike company...

I'm 6'5" with a 34 inch inseam, so I am very long from the waist up.. most bikes I've tried, the cockpit is just too small feeling and I feel like I'm riding too upright or I don't have enough standover clearance for me to feel comfortable about the safety of jim bob and the twins. Fisher's long top tube works great for me, it lets me ride a bike with more standover clearance but a better stretch than some of the bigger framed mass manufactured geometries.

I do hear great things about Kona's for guys my size, particularly the Hoss model.

let me know when you are gonna sell the Fat....I could use 2 in the ole garage....:grinpimp:

buy me the ti sola built with xtr and it's yours. Rob V and Seven still has my measurements. :flipoff2:;)

I have some old cook bros e cranks on it. magura cantilever hydros with kooka levers. I'll have to dig up some old photos of it back in 93 with the manitou 3 on it.

I have a yo Eddie Fat Chance....last year Chris Chance welded/owned the company...

i think by far those frames are the best steel frames out there....

some of the old Gary Fishers are good too....

opinons....

You put down the ribs long enough to actually get exercise?

My Schwinn Scrambler in my parents' basement still kicks ass.

I ride a 1987 Schwinn Circuit steel frame with Shimano STI 600 components, but if I had some spare $$ I would get a steely from this guy:

Colorado Springs custom builder, does everything from track to trials. A few buddies of mine ride on his bikes, they're pretty sweet.
