Off topic, but what controlls the max extention of the axles?? I hope not the shocks??

Great build by the way, I find myself waiting for the next thrilling installment.

Unfortunately in an 80 it is shocks. That can be remedied and I personally don’t like shock as a limiter but that is how Toyota designed it.

Also, on the topic of suspension, we are not doing anything suspension wise until we have most of the weight on the truck. This, in my opinion is the best and only way to setup the suspension.

So everything on the chassis will be bling except coils, shocks and control arms until the body is on the chassis and then some.

Sway bars limit on factory 80 series type setups

There is a lot of bind on the front end of these on 80 series radius arm type suspension. I did a test/thread on this years ago with different lifts, control arms, no sway bars, hitch pin mods, shock upgrades and mounts and pulling shocks.
Unless you have the wrong length shocks to begin with, those shocks aren’t going to limit that front end. It will bind well before the shocks run out of room.

if you are bored.
RTI Ramp/Travel pics, lift changes, sway bars...for reference

At this point my shocks on front were 3” too short. I did not “need” this much travel lol. That’s away bars removed, front pin pulled, longer rear shocks with custom mounts and that out my tires 37” off the ground. This was years ago so newer kits have come out, but the principle is the same.

but yes he’s right, technically the shocks will be the limiter, but with the swaybars on, it wont reach that.

Don’t agree on sway bar because you can’t fit a long enough shock in the rear for sway bar to limit it

I personally don’t want to get into a big 80 series suspension discussion in this build thread. I will say this, go plug factory suspension into a link calculator and you will see it is way less than ideal for off-roading. It can be greatly approved upon with a proper 3-link front and triangulated 4-link rear.

This isn’t an off-roader though, it’s an overland truck. It sounds like Tony is probably running 33’s vs 35’s, no diff armor or belly armor, ect ect ect.

Cheers

Agree he doesn’t need anything close to what I had setup.

stock or lifted stock agreed isn’t the best flexiest setup, but in real world it works great for far better than most people will ever wheel an 80’or similar.
The rear is not the issue with flex in this.

great build, did I miss what color this is going to be?

First panel is welded in, RHS backside front rocker.

Except I need to deal with this nasty area at the back of it first.

Picked this up for the project. Putting it to use tomorrow. MiG plug welds where I can’t use it.
