Temp Laptop Mounts and 'electronic manuals'

Heres the computer I got from a friends dad for eventual use in the 80 as a supplement to my GPS, and to store pics on as they are taken.
These are tough little suckers, this one is stock from the factory, saw several years of use with a corporate exec, then sat for a couple years. Orig. battery still has 2.5 hours of use in it. I use it everyday, surfs the net well, and can run most standard apps. (word, outlook etc). I've been trying to think up a mount, and this thread has helped spike my imagination, so thanks for that. Luckily for my, my mount does not need to be nearly as sturdy as ya'lls does.

This is the more desirable unit of the older generation librettos, the 110ct. 200 mhz processor, 64 mg ram (only thing not upgradable) and 2 gig hd. I will only need to upgrade the HD to store GPS maps.

Run about $200-300 on ebay.

Thats what I was thinking, a mount on the dash somewheres. I really like those VGA monitors in the first link, would let me stow the libretto away.
I was originally thinking I would buy one of the docks for it, which secure really well, and figure out how to get that mounted, and then it is a quick, simple R&R.

I seem to remember a Linux magazine I bought detailing the usage of a full sized PC stashed in the trunk being used as an MP3 player etc ...

...would it be out of the question to take a cheap PC , and mount it in the cargo area ... with all the programs on the HD , and cables running forwards for the keyboard (with ball mouse) , and LCD screen ?

Probably stash the PC inside the rear-passenger compartment , away from prying eyes .

This would mobilize the keyboard and screen . Allowing you or the passenger to place the keyboard on their lap to type more effectively . The LCD screen if small enough could find many places to be stashed .. and mounted .

Would a 2-battery , and good DC convertor suffice ?

"Finally" ???

Oh contraire ! Just think of all the people that have converted over to 'clears' ..... and don't even get me started on the nut-shaving converts ... :flipoff2:

I think my job here is done .

TY

PS : Unless you'd like to foot the bill for equipment for the sake of R&D . I'd love to do this some day ...

Tyler,

This has been done in many vehicles. I can't remember the links but there was a site detaling several "carputer" installs. Many have simply gutted out a desktop pc and stuffed in the trunk and using a large power inverter. Each to their own in this regard I guess.

there was also one detailed here but the pictureses were lost in the sotware change, hope to set one of these up eventually, going to use the space where the CD changer lives (that thing is huge) to put a low power M-ATX board

well, seems that if you have no passenger or they go in the back, the easiest solution would be to just put the laptop on the passenger seat, strapped to the back somehow. :D You get extra vibration isolation too.

Don't tell me; let me guess. This has something to do with some perverted thread started by you and the other "Chat" wierdos. Right?

I probably don't want to know.

I use an Universal Jotto desk laptop mount. Works out well and easily removable. The unit comes with a 1/4" baseplate with six hole for the tranny tunnel. HOwever, I use the seat bracketries for a much better, less wallowy mount. I think Jotto desk unit goes for around $150.

alia176,
Do you know which specific model number you purchased and was the bottom brace a separate piece? Thanks.

I decided to go the 8" Lilliput Touch Screen as appose to having the laptop in the front...

Here are some Pic's

Hefty, that's trick as hell! Nice job. Did you come up with that on your own?

Yeah, sure did....

Took me a while to actually pick the place and find the right mounting screws....

Used plaster board screws (have the folding wings and the nut in the center of them...

OH, and thanks...

Very nice. I've been dreaming of a 7" Lill and a carputer in the double din slot, but have also been thinking of just running a laptop with a Lill screen. I'm assuming you just need to run a serial cable from the laptop to the screen? How is the screen powered?

Cheers, Hugh

Wow!!

Me likes! That is impressive in it's simplicity. How about a pic or two with it in operation.

I've been pondering the 7" in the double DIN with the carputer as well but this seems
alot more obtainable for now......
