I spend some time trying to locate TDC on my engine tonight to install the dizzy. 1977 FJ40 2F motor. I couldn't find the BB on the flywheel. I knew I was close to TDC as I was using the finger over #1 spark plug to verify compression stroke.

I went back inside and looked up some photos of the flywheel. I went back out, pulled my flywheel off and verified that it was in fact a toyota flywheel.. I took a wire wheel to it and found a small discolored circle. No BB and no groove cut before or after it.

The discolored circle seems to match TDC as best I can tell. Is this normal for 1977? Could it have come off?

Ernest, it should look like this

Occasionally I get a rig to work on that the BB has fallen out of; it happens. Remember, it is 7 degrees BTDC.

Guys,
Mine looks nothing like that! There is no groove and no remnant of where a bb was. The flywheel has a toyota marking on it and a number. I will take a picture of it tonight. Weird. I see nothing but a discolored circle. Flywheel is smooth.

Here are a couple of shots of my flywheel. The second picture is a close up of what I believe was TDC. Anyone ever seen a flywheel like this? Is it from a different model? This really threw me for a loop, trying to find the timing mark!

Wow! Ernest that doesn't seem normal. I recommend you copy the timing marks on your flywheel by using a punch for the BB, and chisel for the straight line and some paint. Then all you'll need is to use a friend's flywheel for reference.

Were you able to find the TDC mark?

I don't see it in this pic

Nor this one

See the patch of rust? Just to right. It is the lighter color circle. Same location as the BB on other flywheels. My only guess is this is not the original flywheel. It must be from a later model with electronic ignition?? I tried to search the part number but I didn't come up with anything.

I have referenced it against other flywheel pictures and that lighter color circle is the correct place for the BB. 7 degree mark is three teeth before.

This stuff only happens to me.

I know this is an old thread but wanted say that you aren't the only one! My flywheel was missing tdc but did have the BB. Added tdc with a chisel!
