I think Sean described what I WANT to do with my rig BEST...
I want to be able to do the Rubicon, CLEAN...
In otherwords...I want to have my rig set up to where its capeable to run that trail with some grace and control...
Granted, that was my FIRST time ON that trail (how much can I expect with that level of experience) and the weather conditions (IMO) were not very conducive to a newbie.
As mentioned...Ill start with a front locker, run it again and re assess the situation from there!
Additionally, I need MORE EXPERIENCE more than money to throw at my rig...Rusty and Brett and many others on that run are seasoned wheelers, and Im not considering that....
What Im doing is trying to "build it better" to make up for my lack of driving ability...BOTTOM LINE!:o

Thanks for the help gents!
I, my wife and my rig thanks you!

K

Keith,
The Rubicon, Dusy, Fordyce even though I have not been on these personally are better suited for SWB rigs from what folks have relayed to me and what I have read about these types of trails. Wagons are always going to be an additional challenge due to LWB and extra width. But for everything but those types of runs (wish you could have been on our Highrock Canyon run and Ghost/Mining Town Tour this spring...then you might not be waivering now) the wagons reign supreme! Its always a compromise. You should have bought Brett's 70-series...along with an AT Chaser trailer then you would have been set for both worlds ;)

IMHO, you become a smarter / better driver when you don't have a "build it better/stronger" rig ;)

Couldn't agree more. I have seen guys go from essentially a stock rig to a built to the hilt and never learned to drive. I used to show guys up all the time with my SOA, 35" Jeep with only a 4:1 t-case, and the same with my 4runner. Learning to drive is huge in my opinion.

Now as far as the Mini thing...Don't. You won't be happy. I am only 5'9"/160 and I don't fit in them well, don't know why, just don't. My runner was the SR5, so it had the multi-adjustable bucket seats that were like new, never could get comfortable. Just don't see it happening with you either. Taco wasn't much better, again fully adjustable seats.

The mini allure is tempting because of the parts selection, but like Drew said any #$$hole with 2k can buy and wheel a mini and they are some of the worst trail abusers I have ever ran across.

The rubi will get easier for you, just take your time and do more as you can.

Also what SpressoDan said, you guys have to do a desert trip and all will be right with the LC world.

Yeah,
I had to take a step back and consider that simple fact, that Im still VERY NEW to wheelin, and DO NOT have a lot of experience with terrain like the "CON" and further, Im still getting used to the SOA as well!
But, you are right...The cost of the minis/ 4 runners and the parts availability/ aftermarket support is VERY NICE!
I am of the opinion that if this A$$ hole were to buy another A$$hole's mini, it would NOT ,in turn, cause me to be a trail abusing A$$HOLE and I would still be running with the CLASSY crowds like the BBCNN and Norcal wagons!:D
The wife REALLY WASNT HAPPY with the idea...
She liked the ability to sleep in the back of the rig in the rain!

Also, Id LOVE to get out and do the desert runs witchas!
Itll just take me a bit longer to get there!

Thanks again fellas!

Bretts 70 was BAD ASS, and $$$$$! I wish that I could have afforded that!
Im gonna try and make the high rock run next year!
Unfortunately, I do have a hankerin for the bigger terrain for some reason...Donno what it is?
Ego I guess!

Kieth-Pismo Jim Brantley has tackled all sorts of tough terrain with his 60 over the years, even places where wagons usually don't fit. I have personally seen him run Rubicon 10+ times, Dusy-Ershim etc. Don't think your truck is holding you back. The only thing holding you back is experience and that takes time. There are a few specific ways you could improve your truck, primarily by steeply lowering the gears ie ToyBox, but in the end, it will go anywhere you want to go.

You need to check out Brett's FJ62. It is built they way I would like, and it can go anywhere. Yours is not far off. Brett does have far more experience than you, so that's part of the equation. You might have a chat with him. He drove mini-trucks and 4Runners for years, and finally realized that Cruisers were where it's at all along.

You built that 62. You will continue to do so. There is nothing like doing it yourself.

LOL!
Brett's rig/ abilites are what is giving me the inferiority complex!
That rig is what I WANT mine to be...
I was VERY impressed with it, especially the low gearing, but man....That (when all is said and done) is a PRICY MOD, that will have to come MUCH LATER down the road!
Poor Brett (and Dan and Alvaro and Snook etc...) I felt like they were babysitting me on that run!:crybaby: I very much appreciated it, but still...I felt like such a DWEEB!
But youre ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...my experience is lacking more than anything!
I had forgotten that little tid bit!
So I got home and started looking at the work and price of the mods and got a lil overwhealmed...then started to look at other EASIER options (mini and 4 runners)...
You know the rest!

That is why I posted up before I did anything STUPID!
Ill just have to WHEEL MORE!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

I don't think anybody felt they were baby sitting you. Part of the fun of these runs is helping eaach other make it. Spotting someone through a tough spot, helping with a trail fix, whatever, it's all part of the trip.

You might also look at some less expensive options like an SM420/SM465. I don't know if they would work on your rig but it's worth looking at.

BTW That was my second trip driving, it's not like I'm an old hand just becuse I know where stuff is on the trail. OTOH I gained a LOT of experience watching others run the trail.
There's a lot to be said for riding shotgun a few trips with someone with experience. I owe a big thanks to Shawn and Dan for putting up with me and my stupid questions on those trips, and sharing their knowledge.

Youre a good driver Dan!
It may have only been your 2nd run behind the wheel, but from what Ive seen and heard, youve got quite a bit of wheel time behind you, and you wheel like youre pretty confident.
You (IMO) are like me...tend to NOT give your abilites much credit...
Either way, I look up to you as someone who knows and if you gave me a suggestion, Id surely consider it...:o

You Reno guys are weird.:flipoff2:

"I felt like they were babysitting me on that run!"

Actually, we are babysitting your rig such like any other rigs, rookie or experience.

Don't sell your 60 until AFTER you watch your rig on a wide screen HD video at SnT 2007. Your truck look awesome at Rubicon trail just like others except for your crewcut.

Cheers,

I wish I could make SnT, but its just not gonna happen this year with starting a new job and all....:frown:
I cant wait to see the video of that run...
The couple of clips that Ali took were very cool to watch!
Im not gonna sell the rig...Im just gonna have to dump tons of money into it like everone else does, but its gonna have to happen over time!

Thanks for the encouragement...

BTW, as far as the 'crewcut"...My wife LOVES it!
AAAAAND, I think it makes me look dangerous!:grinpimp:

Jack's life:

Jeep to Mini to 80 to Taco to 80. I'd take Jack's word that the cruisers are better :flipoff2:
