I have a 2006 tacoma 4door TRD with rear locker. The family has grown and I am considering getting rid of the tacoma and getting a 2010 tundra 4door. I have loved the tacoma but need the added space and towing capability. Has anyone else made this jump and can tell me the pros/cons that they have experienced? I know I will miss the locker. Does the tundra have a limited slip?

I had an '04 4 door 4wd Tundra once. It had an LSD with it. I only made one note as I hated it. It had no storage space in it. The back glass went up and down, so behind the rear seats was taken up with that. It had lots of people room, though. the mileage was terrible. It was an auto and I'm not. It was white and love bug season had started. It had goofy fender flares/shapes. Just didn't like it and don't know why I got it really.

Now, I've got a buddy with an '09 or '10 and it's mo better. It has a little more storage and lots of people room. But it looks 10X better with the new body style. It's the ONLY Toyota built lately that looks good, IMO. But...he has 7" of suspension lift and is running a set of 37" tires and only had 2.5" of additional height at the frame vs. my '99 Tacoma with 2.5" of lift on 33s. His is big in every aspect against mine, except ground clearance. And, the 5.7 has plenty of TQ to pull those 37s.

In my opinion the new Tundras are far too big. In my eyes they're fat and ugly, and to be honest my Tacoma is too big in my eyes. My gf's 2003 Tacoma has much better rear/side visibility than my truck. I'd imagine the new Tundras have the same issue.

funny, I hate the new Tundras, too wide, too low and look like catfish.

great engine and probably a great truck but I'm more of a minimalist, my access cab '04 fits me for 95% of what I need it for. bought it used with cash, gets 17 mpg and will last for 250k. (not that 17 mpg is that great, I hear the new ones get 18-20).

that said, I'd look at the eco-boost 4 door F-150 as well.

I love the look of the Taco .. ( actual model ) and the tundra too .. but IMOP to conmute Tundra it's bit overkill .. nice to have the 5.7 if you really need it or going to use ..

I just went the other way, from an '07 Tundra Crewmaxx to a '10 Tacoma doublecab. I loved the Tundra, tons of room, towed well, and LOTS of power. I enjoyed the heated mirrors, power seat and full sliding rear window. Engine and transmission were very smooth, and I had no issues for the 45K I owned it. The only disadvantage was the fuel economy, and the $600.00 payment. I also didn't care for the interior fit and finish, as it was not as refined as the previous Toyota vehicles I have owned. The Tacoma is similar to the '03 Land Cruiser 100 series I had,so I feel more at home in the Taco. I also enjoy the manual trans, but miss the power seat, heated mirrors, and power sliding rear window. I am happier with the $400 payment and additional savings on fuel. Good luck with your decision.:cheers:Brendon

I have been a Ford truck owner for several years until the last 4 I owned all ate the transmissions at about 125K miles. I found my 07 Tundra SR5 slightly used and love it. It has a ton of storage, handles great, comfortable and pulls better than my last 2 F150's. It gets 17 mpg where as my fords all got 12-13 on a good day. I know you want the difference between the taco and tundra so I will say this, go with the tundra, second generation which is 07 and newer.more room, better handling and comfort. You won't be disappointed.

My goodness that looks terrible in every sense of the word.

Brother in law has a 4 door (full rear doors unlike the one pictured), short bed and I like it. The 4 full doors balance off the short nose of the truck. As for width arguments, Im a midsize guy but find the Tundra to be about the same as its competitors in size. Not that much of a difference really. He did something like a level kit to his and is running 33s. It looks, and rides great and the interior room is fantastic.

I do work with this guy. He does wear Flat brimmed hats. But he's one of the funniest guys I've ever encountered. This dozer is a beast. $6k in turbo upgrade, $8k worth of tranny, 27" of lift, I forget the tire/wheel size-but they're huge, the drive shaft is like $2k IIRC, $5k in stereo, the axles $X,xxx!!!, and there's more I can't remember. It'll bark third in 2wd and chirp all 4 in 4wd then just...launch. He got a set of ladder bars from SuperLift and they told him he couldn't hurt them. Drove to a car show and tacoed them doing a burnout. Called SuperLift and they paid for the tow to a shop of his choosing. he said the only weak link now is the U joints and he has a $400 spare in the glove box. Oh yeah, waterproof speakers under the frame. This thing is for weekends only and rarely leaves pavement.

Tundra....despite Brake's experience, I love my DC. I like that it's NOT too big but has more towing, more head and leg room, and a larger bed for hauling. I'm also getting 14mpg. Also, as you can see below, they are very easily built to go anywhere...

I have a 2000 Tundra with ~145k. 4wd limited, I've done headers, y-pipe, exhaust, and much more. Saturday I drove it to a dyno with my school car club. Put down 202.9 hp and 285 torques in 2nd, the automatic kept the guy from doing a pull in 3rd because it kept wanting to downshift. On the way home, I had to keep up with lowered and boosted volvo's and volkswagens, 3rd gear 3,000 rpms most of the way back and I still got 17 mpg. Oh, and with only 2" of lift and some bfg all-terrains I can take it off road, exceed all my friends' expectations as to what it will do, then drive it home. It's my first truck and I don't want to get rid of it. Honestly, if you're interested in a tundra of either generation, check out tundrasolutions.com.

I suppose it will depend on your needs. I personally have always liked the look of the Taco's, heck, I'm a huge fan of the old Toyota 4x4 pickups with the 22R / 22RE motors...they just have that look to them...
As for the Tundra's, they are not that bad, they definitely give you more room but horrible fuel economy. Of course if you used your e-locker a lot, yeah I'm sure you will miss that, have you considered a 4-door prerunner Taco?
