Tachometer stopped working intermittently on lx470

Yikes, that sucks. Pulling the cluster isn't really a PITA but having to wait while they're fixing it sounds like a pain.

I asked my friend last night and he said after a month or so it seemed to self-heal itself and has worked fine for a year and a half. I also asked him what kind of problems he had and he had jumping needles, and gauges that would die randomly then fix themselves at the next startup.

Hmmm, any water leakage anywhere under the dash?
No water leakage at all. This began after many miles of very rough bumpy Offroad. I suspect that has something to do with what caused it.

Well folks I think I have bad news. Upon closer inspection on Startup, it appears to be the tachometer itself has a problem. When you start the engine you can see the needle jump slightly and you can hear a noise as it attempts to move. Sometimes the tach functions perfectly, and sometimes it does this. I will call one of the repair places in the next few days and see what they have to say. You can pull the entire cluster and they will repair it for about $300. That sounds like an enormous pain in the ass.

Where are you finding a reputable place to fix it for only $300? I know.. having to say "only $300"

Is this the route you went?
Mine just died on the way home...<sigh>...wondered if it was related to the weird EFI relay problem I have that is supposed to be fixed by replacing the ignition switch / haven't done that work yet though - don't see how but weird 2 electrical problems in the last couple weeks...

Let me know what works/doesn't for you & I'll do same.

Mine now appears to be totally dead. I think it's the tachometer itself. I can't afford to have it fixed right now. There is a black wire from the ECM to the cluster that runs the tach. I will check it but I doubt that's it. I'm not sure about your EFI problem but if the ECM was not getting the engine rotation or tachometer signal I don't think the engine would run at all. There is no fix other than to pull the whole cluster and send it into a repair place.

Back working this morning - going to watch temps (below freezing today, above yesterday) and see if above/below freezing has anything to do with it, maybe water somewhere...

Let me know how you make out. Mine started doing this intermittently 4 weeks until it appears to have completely failed. I'm not sure of course, but I think the key is when all your other instruments work but only the tach is malfunctioning the tachometer has simply broken. Lousy tachometer is the bottom line. Cannot take the shock of off road.

My tach started working again, intermittently. Starts it stays even if I drive for hours. I have known as something else. My trip odometer "A" sometimes resets itself on its own. I'm wondering if this can be some kind of a ground that's affecting both things. Does anyone know where to look for these grounds from the instrument cluster?

I think it's clear your having some sort of contact issue or wiring issue. Have you checked all the connectors for the cluster to make sure they're straight and clean? Possibly a contact issue within the cluster itself? Have you tried putting dialectric grease in the connectors to help aid any bad connection?

Lousy tachometer is the bottom line. Cannot take the shock of off road.

If this was simply a lousy tachometer design I think we would be seeing a lot more failures. I doubt Toyota would put something on their world staple off road vehicle and it not be able to handle the roughness of rough roads.

Just wanted
Edit: added pics. Pull the piece circled in green (sorry, on my phone) straight out with the steering column angled down. You'll be able to see the two screws in the white rectangular housings below the instrument cluster.

Just wanted to say thanks, I ran into this instrument cluster malfunction mentioned in this thread and your advice was the solution.

04 LX, same issue. I lost mine while reversing (high speed over bumps) it had never failed before. Checked the plug connection screws, no luck there. My scanner receives RPM So I assume the sensor is good (obviously) and I get the tick at the cluster when I power up and start. Only the tach is dead (after its pre start tick).
