T Fitting on Heater Hose

Note that, while I didn't measure them, the bottom fitting of the T is a different diameter than the top connectors and the clamp on the bottom fitting is different as well. The visual difference of the clamps is subtle, so one should be careful to note which is which.

Last week I put in new T's , new heater hoses as well as radiator hoses on my '03 TLC (I have a post out there on Coolant Hoses). The ten year old Ts were starting to deteriorate and the end of one fitting broke off. I'll do my '03 LX in a week or two.

I don't think it's worth coming up with a "lifetime" T fitting, when I'm going to buy new heater hoses every ten years (or every Timing Belt change) anyway. Plus, I don't know that the lower hoses will fit the T solution pictured above.

But, everyone has to do what lets them sleep well at night.

Leave it up to TLC owners to go over kill on everything. Even a simple T fitting. Nothing wrong with the Genuine part but why not get a tank-resistant T anyway?

Ok guys has anyone ever had one fail? If so at what mileage/years?

Mine just failed at 116k - hoses are ok for now but won't last another 100k so I'm going to swap them out too. Total price for the 6 hoses and 2 T's shipped from toyotapartszone.com was $95. Here is my order:

87245-6A180 HOSE, WATER 1 10.64
87248-60460 PIPE, WATER 2 7.70 15.40
87245-6A210 HOSE, WATER 1 8.26
87245-6A190 HOSE, WATER 1 17.11
87245-6A220 HOSE, WATER 1 11.71
87245-6A201 HOSE, WATER 1 15.62
99556-20200 HOSE, WATER 1 5.16

Good lord, that price is rediculus. $7 factory ones lasted me 116k...
Yeah, but that's ihmud.

My oem's went 140K without failure, replaced them with oem's recently.

You can also get a brass version, but all ends are also equal diameter, on amazon...no reason for stainless in this application, though it is pretty. The amazon t's are in the general price vicinity of oem parts.

I lost my heater T on the trail a few weeks ago. I have bypassed the heater system and the truck runs fine. If yours breaks while on the trail or road, you can bypass them and keep driving. I'll post a picture of how I have mine setup. I am going to fix it, just not a big deal when it's 100*F out.

KVW - Thanks for the post with a link to ToyotaPartsZone. Just bought 3, 2 to replace existing and 1 spare. Also planning to install my Helton Heater from Cruiser Outfitters, sweet!

Bringing back a old thread as I am catching up on some main. items. Where is best place to order these locally, I am in NC. Thanks

Local dealer, Beno, or just go with the brass style from Home Depot.

Thanks very much for the part numbers. It's great having them consolidated in one place. I ordered all these parts from Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Parts & Accessories Online for about $110 shipped, if anyone is curious.

I was towing my race car home from Barber Motorsports Park on July 31 of this year when one of my couplings let go. My 1999 LC100 had just under 327,000 miles at that point of her life. So, they can last more than 100k miles, but I wouldn't suggest pushing it. ;) If I had known of this issue before, I would have replaced them as routine maintenance, especially because it doesn't look that difficult, and the parts are cheap.

I replaced my T's and hoses this evening from Toyota Parts Deal, hot T crumbled and the other one did as well with just a little twist and turning! Mine seemed to be original, 235k miles!!

re: 2000 LX with 130k

Bought the Ts yesterday at Camelback Toyota. How much fluid do you lose when you take them off? Do I need a need a pan underneath or just a towel up top? Sorry, too lazy to read the whole thread. Thanks.

Barely lost any, towel up top.

Just did mine and used 2 of these:

Although the T's are 5/8 - 1/2 - 5/8, the OEM ones are definitely a bit larger. These slipped into the hoses a lot easier so I used screw clamps instead of the original clamps. No leakage from what I saw. Kept original hoses also.

Did drive the LC around to make sure it didn't leak or overheat. So far so good. The only concern I have is that these T's get really hot after a short drive. Should I be concerned about that? I know the hoses are meant to withstand really hot temperatures but just a bit worried. I am just paranoid? :meh:

I think the reason your tees are getting "hot" to the touch is because they are metal, so they are more apt to transfer thermal energy through the material than the relatively insulating plastic factory units. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it bothers you, you can always wrap it with something like exhaust wrap. Or just put in the inexpensive factory ones that lasted me over 320k miles, which is what I am doing. ;)

Noticed my drivers side t appeared to have leaked at some point even though I never saw any fluid. Decided to replace the t's as a preventative measure, went to the local Toyota dealer and ordered two t's for $21. While replacing the drivers side t it broke off inside the hose (it was very fragile). Had to cut the hose off, the hose wouldn't pull off and I was too scared to pull any harder it was like it had welded itself. Went back to the Toyota dealer and Ordered the hose $22 ha. Hardest part was getting to the clamps, added a little coolant and burped it. It appears all is fine, glad I did it.

On my to-do list
Here are all the part numbers:

Whoa, that is super helpful! Planning on replacing all of my hoses in the Spring.

I have a leaking tee on my '07 at 145k miles; I should have had the shop do them when I pro-actively did the water pump along with the timing belt around 110k.
