Joe, sounds like we got a pretty good plan. The weather Saturday looks to be pretty good, shouldn't be to hot and there's only about a 20% chance of rain. We still planning on leaving around 1:30 friday correct?

80* for Boone on Saturday and low 60s/high 50s overnight Friday. Heckuva lot better than the Triangle.:D

Yes, see you at BP @ Cary Parkway and Chapel Hill Friday 1:30.

If it's just you, Andy, Juan, Maria, and me, I'd be happy to cook a nice entree for dinner Friday night, if others want to bring sides/salad/bread.

Just to chime in, I'd love to go with you guys once the cruiser is up and running. I'm headed to the beach this weekend...

I hope everyone has / had fun. Work threw me a mean curve ball late yesterday and shut down my chances of going.

Can't wait to hear stories / see pics.

Struck out on trails

I had to come back to Raleigh Saturday night so hopefully Greg, Juan, and Maria get to do some fun stuff today.

There were no trails, period. None.

Most every township road and forest road I had marked was closed. It was incredibly frustrating, we'd get to the road and it looked very cool but with a big gate on it.

We spoke with some locals at a gas station in Barnardsville - a couple pulled up in a V8 40 while we were there! - and they pretty much confirmed no trails.

We scouted all along and off the BRP and just could not find anything more than dirt roads; except one supernasty river rock garden off a campsite that tempted Greg but led nowhere.

But the good stuff: the weather was incredible! Just completely perfect Friday and Saturday.

Black Mtn campground was very nice, aside from the bear activity. A family fed Greg and me Friday night, all homecooked southern food. One of our camping neighbors talked in his sleep most of the night.

We drove up to the top of Mt. Mitchell, stopped at overlooks on the BRP, and got out and scouted on foot a bit and enjoyed the incredible scenery and sights.

IMHO this is a perfect place for a relaxing get-away, but obviously there's no wheeling at all. O well.

Some great trails were found in are travels up the Parkway to Blowing Rock sunday. I will follow up with routes and pics. Some led to nothing but the ride to arrive at nothing was great. All of which were on a forest road that led thru an orchid and along the parkway down a mountain, there were several off-shoots which we scouted and now have marked. We completed our trip in Boone where we took a quick stop at High Country 4X4, during my time at App it was very rare they had cruisers there, today we stopped and they had a 83 FJ40, what looked to be a 77/78 FJ40 and a somewhat odd blue 60 SOA, Sliders, ARB, roof rack and some ridiculous flames across half the hood and fenders. The 60/and 77/78 40 are for sale both at a price of $12,500/each. I will have more info tomorrow on the expedition. Weather coudln't have been better.

That's fantastic news, Greg! I can't wait to hear more - I want to go back out to that area.

I think there are more trails...we passed other trails that looked worth exploring...we did not have a lot more time and after Greg's horrible APHIDS  Attack he was done with any exploring.

That orchard road is a long road we did not even go 1/4 of the length. I believe we are about to discover something interesting. I would probably take another trip.

It was nothing we were just on a extremely tight trail and next thing there were some ridiculous amount of aphids crawling around the cruiser, not an attack of any sort. Just strange, I'd never seen them nor heard of them before...wouldn't stop me from taking that trail again, it was worth it.
