Righto I'm aware there are two main sealants toyota uses with 80's - there's a black one that is described as 'FIPG' which I think is an oil-rated RTV silicone, and there's a red one which is an anerobic sealant much like Loctie 518. I've used 518 before with Saab engines but tend to avoid silicones on those engines. I'm going to need some RTV type sealant for the 80.

What are good non-Toyota substitutes for the Toyota black stuff? I've got valve cover and timing belt work to do soon to the 1HZ engine in my 80 and not keen on fluffing up what a stealership wants for the Toyota 'OEM goo'. But open to thoughts.

I been using the permetex for years with no leaks, permetex is good stuff.

I Ty have been using Permatex RTVs for nearly 40 years on my Landcruisers with no problems. For the valve cover on my 80 I use a new gasket on clean surfaces with the original fasteners set to the correct torque. I use NO sealant and I get NO leaks. John

Hondabond or Yamabond they make FIPG look like a joke when it comes to sealing

I've never sealed anything with it and had it leak. We literally use about 50 tubes a month here at work and have never had anything leak. It works. Lots of people have their own favorite because of working at one place or another. I've been working for Toyota for a pretty long time and the FIPG has proven itself time and time again to be awesome.

I've had the same experience with many other brands... not to say that there's anything wrong with the Toyota stuff. I just fail to see the advantage when the alternatives have the same track record.

The quality of the seal has a lot more to do with the preparation and application than it does with the product itself.

So i just spent the morning prepping the half c u r lea for a seal tomorrow. I cleaned all the old sealant off and de greased the part. Any other tips to use the fpig? I have never used the stuff.

To reiterate this:

We sell monthly 2-3 boxes of the 00295-00103 (black) engine FIPG to a Hyundai dealership and the same amount to a local Ford dealership. They swear by it.

Also, my 80 is held together with FIPG. Ask anyone that's seen it recently.

If you like FIPG give Hondabond a try. It's all I use on any sealing surface and with any fluid and it doesn't have a funky smell.

My 1HZ valve cover gasket is leaking at the back (around the half-moon), so that needs attention, and as I will soon by doing valve shims on the engine (once I get a tool), the valve cover has to come off for that anyway. I'm also going to do the timing belt and water pump as the timing belt is up to 95 k km so it's close to being due. The timing belt video by 'powermodz' on youtube mentions the black goo. Threebond (which is the OEM goo maker that Toyota uses) does have a black RTV silicone (1207B I think) so Toyota's one might be that product. The red one (anerobic) will probably be equivalent of Loctite 518.

As a side-note, while I'm at it I am going to see if I can remove the rear stud out of the cylinder head for the valve cover and using a normal bolt as I have to lower the back of the engine about 25 mm to get the valve cover clear of the stud without hitting the pipework secured above it that's fixed to the body.
