Subaru's are great! I had an 83 4x4 wagon that ran like a top with 323,700 miles on it. it ran like crap when i got it and over heated so the owner dumped it for 150. I adjusted the valves on the 1600cc and put in a new thermostat and a temp sensor for the fan and it had no problems. I let it go for a new set of bfg mud terrains on wheels for my chevy to this kid. :o Now i wish i would have kept it! :frown:

They are super easy to work on and they run great!

Subarus rock!!!. Here my wagon..yes its my dd:D

BRAT = Bi-drive Recreational All terrain Transporter

27x9.50x15.I did the toyota 6 lug conversion so i could put those mini wheels on it.

Sorry to threadjack :-)

What year and model is that wagon? What kind of MPG do you get?

I love those old BRATs. There may be some info at nasioc.com. Thats where I went when I had my WRX.

My brother had one in high school in '81. It was a model year '75 or '76, I think. The worst thing about it was it's tendency to float. Lots of good wheeling in that car...

The following year one of my roomies in college had one too. He turned his wheels around for an extra-wide look with some minor fender trimming; pretty ghetto in retrospect. Somewhere I've got a 20x30 b&w of him blasting through a deep creek that I took for a photography class.

I had a 1986 that I bought new. I was parts manager at a Subaru dealer at the time. It was pretty damn cool actually. It had a two speed transfer case and twin sunroofs.

Anybody know what BRAT stands for?

I doubt it.

Bi-drive

Recreational

All-Terrain

I was scratching my head wondering what a Brat looked like until I saw the pics. They were called a Brumby in oz, named after the Australian bred work horse.
They were real popular on farms and and for those who didnt want a heavy duty type 4wd.
A fRiend of mine had a 80s modl wagon he bought cheap with an Impreza engine:D

I have done number of engine changes and clutch changes on the subaru line. Love those vehicles because it is so easy to change the parts on the engines. In fact in some cases it is easier to take the engine out of the legacy? to do the clutch change. Years ago purchaced one at a auction for my own use. It was a blue 1994 legacy wagon. It was everything in a car that I wanted. Good and solid on the road with great exceleration. Only downside is the 22 mpg fuel economy. I recently have seen my used Legacy on the road as the next buyer is now driving it :) To bad Subaru did not make a opposed 4 cylinder diesel engine.
