looking at a BRAT Cruiserdan help

Stumbled across an '84 turbo with 108K on the clock.

Says it idles well but wont go over 30 MPH. I'm thinking maybe a clogged Cat.

My dad is a good wrencher but not familiar with these engines at all. Are they easy to understand and work on?

should I persue this or walk away?

Brat Forums??

I can't find a BRTA forum.
Subarubrat.com is , like empty.

I don't know if I can trust a Subaru Turbo with over 100,000 miles on it.
I like to find a place to post specific questions IF I buy this little BRAT.

What to look for when buying.
What normally poops out on these.

Questions like that.

Yeah, there aren't any really good Subaru forums. My friend that bougth the Brat is having the same problem.

That Brat your looking at doesn't sound too bad but getting parts like a turbo might be a little difficult but I'm sure if you got it cheap enough that it could be worth it. As for the turbo being the problem, its a possibility. It could be a weird problem with fuel getting to the motor, maybe a clogged fuel filter or something. It depends on what its doing when you get to 30mph. Let me know what it does (does it stumble or just hold a smooth constent 30). It definately could be a clogged cat too. I've heard of that symtom coming from a clogged cat.

The Brat I'm working on now has a lot of front end rust. I do not really like the brake setup either. The e-brake is on the front wheels and the rear brakes are a pain to get apart. :o Especially without my air tools!

Try NASIOC.COM for anything Subi related. (Besides my FJ-40 I have a WRX wagon)

This weekend I'm putting a clutch in the Brat. I've some pics that I'll post tomorrow in a new thread. We're doing the clutch, cleaning/rebuilding the carb and fixing some of the bodywork.

I had a '78. Awesome, 2spd transfer, 4spd trans, rear seats, rear seatbelts were still in the box behind the front seat when I got it, factory push bar, Hella 500's with Cibie H4/H1 5.75inch headlights (that I still have if anyone has an old Chevelle or something that uses the 4 smaller bulbs let me know) I really wish I would have kept that car, I would hammer the Forest Circus roads and out run my buddies that had pre-runner style trucks in the turns but they would out power me in the straights. But now with gas the way it is it would be the perfect commuter.

Clutch Replacement

Well in the past two days I've been working to get the engine out, fenders patched, and body ready for paint. So far its going pretty well. Couldn't find a machine shop open to get the flywheel turned so I'll have to wait until Monday. I found some frame rust with the engine out. I'll be working on that tomorrow so I have a good amount of work cut out for myself.

Well I finished the work on my buddies Brat a couple days ago but just been to lazy to post the pics but here you go:

I fixed the frame and then patched the inner fenderwell using an old door-skin. We even got to paint the car which I didn't think we would have time to but we did.

1979 Subaru Brat info needed

Just joined IH8MUD, I am looking for information on 1979 Subaru Brat. Thinking about selling and don't know what a fair price would be. :frown: I have two canopies, extra motor, some other parts, need to contact my dad for what they are, sorry:o My Subie is in pretty good shape, was resurrected from two Subies, both sat idle for 10 years or more. Has some dents not bad. Interior in good shape, original seat covers. The dual seats attached in the bed are still with the rig. It's a struggle to get it started, but once it has ran for awhile, runs great. It keeps blowing dash fuses. Four wheel drive works great. Any info would be appreciated. Can contact me at jaybirdkatts1953@hotmail.com

I just bought an 86 Brat GL. I had to have it hauled home because the brakes don't work. I know, I know, who needs brakes! Right! Anyway, the frame rail on the passenger side just underneath firewall is missing like 3" chunk.

Is this an easy weld repair or should I just get another body? I forgot to mention, there is nothing left of the rocker panels and the left rear fender and inner wheel wells are pretty well shot too.

My buddies had the same thing on it. I repaired it myself with a piece of plate steel I had and built my own box and replaced the framerail and then cut a patch for the inner fenderwell.

It was from the battery either leaking or exploding at some point in the car's history. If you are hesitant about it I would take it somewhere but it is going to be expensive. I guess it depends on how much you love your Brat. The one I worked on was bought for a dollar so we didn't really care about how it looked as long as it was "safe" and solid.

My cousin got a wagon for free!
See what came of it here.

Wow, this thread is back from the dead!

I had an 84 Turbo wagon. I loved that car. It had a cool wooden steering wheel.

Brats are cool! My uncle used to have one and I road around in the seats in the bed.
