I never labeled/dated my drive lines, I need 1975-1978 FJ40 STOCK , no lift or shackles, flange to flange measurements with 3/4" to 1" slip yoke showing. Front and Rear Thanks, John

Here's a measurement from Poser

I have front and rear shafts from a 76, 78, and 79 40 series.


The TUBE section of these shafts all measure as follows:


15.50" of tube for the front shaft


7.50" of tube for the rear shaft


The rest of the four speed driveshaft components are identical, the ONLY difference will be the length of the tube.

Here's a measurement from Poser

I Keep finding 8 1/2" rears weld to weld, and do have 15 1/2" fronts. How much travel on the above 28.5 and 21 inchers? Thanks, John

I would measure my 76 but it's chebby powered. I think @Nader might have stock 76 drivelines. Maybe he will measure for you.

Can you clarify the measurement are you needing? I guess I'm not sure what you mean by the travel.

Outer flange to outer flange, installed on a stock 40. Travel distance would be needed for the measurement if drive line would be off of the rig, Should be about 3/4" for stock drive train, the drive line travels in and out of the slip yoke. Thanks, John

John I have a stock 3/79 sitting in my garage as well as a 68 that has a 76 H42. Neither has a lift. Springs are pretty flat on the 68 but the 79 are still pretty good.

Doing a little research find the short shaft the same front and back are the same 3/79-7/80. Front long shaft 1/74-9/83 are the same part number in the US market. Rear shaft show 1/74-10/77 then 10/77-7/80. Then another part number 8/80-9/83 with a split transfer case without a hand brake. SOR shows the used rear driveshaft 1/74-1984.

Thanks John, This is for a 1972 that is getting a 1976 4 speed. I just want to send the mud member the drive lines that fit as mine are not labeled.

Provided that some PO in my rig's past didn't change it out, here is my '77 rear drive shaft dimensions fully compressed & fully open"

Compressed = 21"

Open = 23"

Note: When I installed the 2" OME lift, I installed rear shims and a double cardan drive shaft.

He is what I found on my stock 79. Front bumps stops have at least 2" clearance. Even more on the back.
Overall front is right at 29". Large solid tube section (which is what I would use to determine which driveshaft is a four speed) is around 15 1/4" depending where on the welds you measure.
Rear is around 21 1/2" overall. Large solid tube is right around 8" . Both have a little over a inch they could compress.
The short section and the part of the long side called cover (shows as a separate part) are the same for many years and no difference front or back.
